Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! There are filters INSIDE THE IP? I've only half taken it apart, but I have not seen any in there so far! How on earth would you clean them? Disassemble the pump in it's entirety?
Slow idle is due to clogged filters INSIDE the IP. 2 inside the L300 IP. Crud in veg oil. Especially when going up a steep street, with clouds of black exhaust.
Also I too have this lower idle on vegetable. Just assumed it was b/c of higher vaccum required to suck (yes even heated veg) through a plantdrive system.

Yeah, I hope it's just part of how the system works and not indicative of a bigger problem. Hell, even on diesel the idle has to be much higher than the spec of 750 RPM or else when you drop it into gear it really shakes the van. I adjust the throttle stop knob to give me 750 RPM in gear and it smooths right out. Strange that they didn't design it to give more fuel under load. Most cars of that era compensated the idle when putting an auto tranny in gear.

By the way, i figured it out after all this time. It idles slower on veggie oil because I use one of those thermostatically controlled electric preheat elements right up before the injector pump as a redundancy to ensure warm enough oil. THIS draws about twenty amps, which puts more load on the alternator... which drops the idle. Putting on the headlights, especially the brights does the same thing.

slow idle on wvo

Glad that was figured out. I had a diesel do the same things but not for the same apparent reason that is switching to veg oil would lower the idle noticeably but it was not due to a load on the engine. I attributed it to the fuel being harder to suck. But I've since learned that it's related to what is happening to the fuel in the pump body. It behaves differently then diesel because it is a different viscosity and since this will affect internal IP pressures it has an impact on timing and speed governing. A thought occurs that both things could be going on in that situation, and the speed governor is sensitive enough to the load.
