1988 Van Wagon auto trans - anyone installed new filters?

Post by IdahoDoug »

I bought my Van with a leaking oil pan due to a dent. I'm going to get it fixed and while It is repaired, I wanted to install new filters. I know that when I get in there I will want to know for sure which things to loosen to remove the old filters and their holders. Some transmissions you can do serious damage accidentally unscrewing a valve and watching spring loaded bits fall out.

So has anyone done this on the automatic? Or can someone point me to a diagram of the trans I could use for reference? The L300 reference materials seem focused on newer transmissions and specifically the 4WD versions. Thanks.

FYI, I got the kit from NAPA - includes a new gasket, and a trans filter. Will post after I use the kit. It was $26.

Just take the pan off, and you will see the bolts that hold the filter in. I got my kit from Autozone for 12-15.

If you want more instructions on the transmission; the L300 transmission is the same as the Mighty Max automatic. You maybe able to find a writeup by the Mighty Max guys, or a service manual for something like a 90 Max.

Thanks. So the dipstick tube is pretty lengthy. Do you recall if you could pull the pan/tube off without jacking the Van up? Thanks! I will be doing this next week.

You will note that the upper part of dipstick tube is secured using a bolt.

You will need to have the van up on jack stands to service the transmission.

You will notice that there is a place near the end of the engine cradle tube that you can support with the stands. There is no place on the body to support with stands or jack on. That is for the front.

Thanks, good to know for planning about the jackstands as the van will be stationary for a couple days. I'm going to pull the exh manifold and bring it to the same welder, so will sit for a couple days at least until these parts come back. On the manifold, I looked at a Mighty Max and it seemed to have an extra metal tube or two off the manifold, so unsure of its fit. OTOH, it is fully exposed and looked to be a 15 minute job to yank and have in my hand when I take mine off to compare. So, hmmm...another trip to the Upull...
