Check the condition of the fuel filler hoses too, #4 and #18 in the diagram. I have had these rot away and split on both of my vans.

Sup deli-mongers,

I recently caused a head gasket failure on the engine in my van after botching a timing belt inspection. Crazy to think it was coming up on 80K miles under my watch. But I took the opportunity to do a top-end rebuild and replace most of the pistons; also got to inspect a lot of other things.

I reviewed your posts on your blog, and how you had the in-tank filter clog. I remember when I mentioned to pull the tank and have it coated inside; right now there is probably alot of corrosion and junk in the gas tank. I used POR-15's gas tank cleaning agent, prep liquid, and tank coating; it's kinda hard to make the coating liquid flow into all the baffled places and nooks and crannies inside the tank, but if you flip it in the right way you can.

Found the cylinder head replacement interesting. I'm redoing my head gasket right now. It just started leaking water into the oil. Head gaskets don't last forever. I'm putting in new valve springs and valve stem seals, etc. while I have it off the van. You head having the roller rockers was interesting and makes me wonder if I could just get the cam and roller rockers for my head.
I know that some of the Mighty Max owners talked about using cams from other Mitsubishi products, but sounds like they don't work without some re-machining...

As for the exhaust, there are some headers from Australia that go on the L300 Delica with the 4G64, but they are nearly $400 with shipping and I've never seen them in person, so I can't vouch for them really.
I'm going to have my exhaust manifold welded (again) and then maybe leave the heat shield off and just wrap the intake tube located above it in the engine bay in fiberglass heat wrap to sheild it from the heat. A Nissan parts manager said that techs back in the 80's used to leave the heat shields off the 200SX's CA20E's exhaust manifold to keep it from cracking due to the shield retaining too much heat in the manifold. Maybe that's one reason the Mitsubishi ones are cracking too... Going to try it and see...

The tank inside is actually very clean, found during the in-tank pickup filter replacement!

I ended up welding the manifold myself - couldn't reach inside some spots, so it still leaks just a bit. Ah well - not the end of the world to me.

I actually DO have a set of tube headers, bought from Australia! I was thinking of throwing them on there, but I didn't want to spend even more time redoing the exhaust. I figure if I ever have the exhaust system fully redone, I'll switch to the headers.
