Who's a ham? When did you get your first call sign? What call signs do you presently hold? What qualifications do you hold?

Jesse, have you received permission from the HAM operators to post their call signs?

Falco.

Falco suggested this very topic to bring together all the delica Ham's under one roof during the Vedder Mtn trail ride, hence it's creation.

alex3025, delicat and tardisdeli are onboard as well for sharing. :M

Amateur radio call signs are public information.

so are phone numbers but some people might not want them posted places (like bathroom stalls) without their knowledge. 8-)

No not the same at all. You are leasing a phone number from the telco. That is a private transaction. The listing of your number is another matter; you choose to list or not. As you get to choose your caller id string.

However Amateur Radio is a public service and one of the central tenets of this is that everything on HAM is fully open including the identity of the operators. You aren't allowed to transmit code or obfuscate things.

The basic notion is that it is public spectrum and Industry Canada wants it to be easy for the clubs to self-regulate. There is potential for abuse and this keeps everyone honest. But the other reason is that the openness encourages innovation which is why you have wonderful things like APRS and so on.

As per Industry Canada, call signs are public information.

Echoing Rich's comment, it is that way for transparency, openness and sharing.

This is one of the questions on the Industry Canada Amateur Radio examination.

See here: http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/smt-gst.ns ... 01812.html

What information is not available to the public:
Information that cannot be released due to restrictions under the Privacy Act, such as telephone numbers and date of birth, will not be released to the public.

Here is how a call sign lookup appears on the Industry Canada site:

Thanks bro although David has the bragging rights. He got 100% !

Basic nets you all privileges on all the Amateur Radio bands below 30 MHz, except high power transmitter operation.

Honors nets the Ham operator access to the HF bands.
