I had major black smoke (constant not intermittent as described) and really rich smelling exhaust. The problem ended up being a broken intake rocker arm; more specifically the roller broke out of the arm.

I paid $370 which I think is way high but didn't know it would be so much until I got the bill. Well I finally figured my leak out. Water was coming in the windshield wiper posts. It turns out that they were loose; I folded back the rubber cover, tightened the nuts up and have not had a wet floor in a few weeks. Ya!
