Getting a flat spot now and then

Sometimes when I am accelerating there is a temporary stall in power then a puff of smoke comes out the back and it returns to normal. I have put about 24000km's on it since it was imported and had most of the standard stuff done. Should I be looking at re adjusting the timing belt or would this perhaps indicate an electrical short somewhere?
