hallo all,
my lovely 1990 deli is immobile in calgary, alberta. i had to abandon it there on my way up to the northwest territories for the summer. so i am here in yellowknife and it is there in calgary at the mechanics (4 blocks away from where it started to refuse to go forwards/ backwards).....
does anyone know of a used transmission i could buy? preferably not shipping it from japan?
thanks for all info,
jen

Not that I have one, but you might want to put automatic (I assume it is auto by the description).

What are the symptoms?
Did you pull the fluid to see if any big metal in it?
I have rebuilt my own automatics and standards over the years. Standards are pretty simple and usually repairable. Do any of the gears work? It is not a clutch problem is it? Did it make any noise before it stopped working (they usually tell you with bearing noise etc...)
If non of the gears work it could also be the transfercase that has found a neutral (they have a neutral it just is not on the delica shifter). Did you try 4x4 to see if the rear end failed? you could of broke the input or output shaft.
Just want to make sure you are getting the right part. A good transmission shop (very hard to find) should be able to diagnose it.
It could also be a broken cable or linkage on the shifter it has to travel a long way on a forward control.
please describe the symptoms (not that diagnoses is easy over the web).
Cheers
I said automatic since it is more of an automatic problem not to go forward or backward if they fail. Standards usually move in on gear even with damage (my first 4 speed in my highschool hotrod had no 3rd for a long time till I pulled it apart, put in $100 parts, and it took years of abuse after that).

more details on the symptoms:
i drove from vancouver (where i just, days prior, had an overhaul done: new shocks, something about the alternator, new brakes, belts, oil change, i.e. lots of $$$).
by canmore, i put it into reverse in the gas station and CLUNK it felt like i ran into a large metal object. in fact i did not, it just would not go backwards, but really felt like i hit something half a meter from my bumper. a few tries (and wondering if this life-long manual transmission girl had suddenly lost the ability to shift properly), and it worked fine.
by the time i was in calgary, it happened twice more. by now i knew it was the van, not me. then it started to not want to go in 1st or 2d. i made an appointment to have it seen by the closest (and highly recommended) mechanic. 4 blocks from the shop, i tried to enter an intersection and it would not go into any gear. SIGH. sitting in the deli, on the phone with CAA, waving vehicles past me.
i kept trying and spontaneously it started in 3d (of course on an amber light) and i CREEPED into the intersection and hobbled the four blocks to the shop.
that is what happened.....

Shop pull the oil out? Should have metal in it. Sounds like a shaft broke or bearing failed and a shaft fell out?
Hard to do over the internet.
what does the shop say? If it is the transmission it maybe worth droping it out (has to come out anyhow) and open it up. Not sure how easy parts are to get for it, but a good standard shop with a good parts supply maybe able to overhaul it.
Sorry to hear. Let us know how it works out. I am really interested to hear what happened as pulling away in reverse does not sound like a large amount of power to lead to falure.
best of luck....there was an other member on here that had the 5 speed fail not to long ago (if I remember right)

I had some tranny problems.
It ended up being the input shaft bearing which was replaced.
Haven't had anything similar to what you are describing.

i lost my 5spd last december. all my foreward gears worked, but the transmission wouldn't shift into reverse. there were broken pieces and slag inside the oil!:o
i just had the whole thing replaced.
