I was browsing the web and I found a Mitsu dealer in Richmond, BC that is selling a '91 Super Exceed for $19,000. I wonder what they mean by "loaded"... There's got to be a lot of options, because they're worth like $9k ~ $10k extra... I hope people check this web site before buying from them.

I saw that one too, almost fell off my barstool when I saw that. As it stands I put the figures together, dealers pay max and I do mean MAX $2500.00 at auction (based on stats from internet) Max. another $1500 for de-registration and ground costs, and another Max. of $2000 to get it delivered to New Westminster. Another Generous $2000 in parts and labor for a total of $8000. Of course I'm in a hurry for mine and I don't mind not going through all the hassles of bringing in one myself so I dont mind that a dealer would stand to make 3-4 grand on the entire transaction. But NINETEEN THOUSAND? Those guys are @#$holes.

wow. I had noticed that the markups have gone up quite a bit since I first started looking for my Delica about a year and a half ago. $19,000 is pretty ridiculous though.

I bought mine for $8000 less than a year ago... so i guess with all the fresh scrapes and dings from off roading, the grinding to fit wheels, the scratches on the dash, the cracked altimeter pod, the carpet being taken out of the back, the seats removed, the TV/VCR/Disc changer taken out and over 35,000 additional km on the odometer... it's got to have depreciated it to around... hmmm, say.... $12000?
Wow its rough driving a Delica.(good thing I baby it so much!)

wow I would like to see those delicas for $2500 MAx, I am online everynight and watch the auctions , and some that are only in japanese. last night a 3.5 grade delica green&grey, just over 100K , few scratches and regular wheels, not even alloy, STARTED auction at $3200 and when it went past $4000, I stoped paying attention. I know there is a couple sites that show delica vans at low prices, but that is only for that sites auctions, try to get one off them for those prices. and then pray that its going to run and have no problems. I know what you mean about almost 20k for a delica, that is stupid high price, but you saying that dealers get their delicas for under $2500. give me a break, its just a rediculous statement, as rediculous as paying 19k for a L300.

Whoa there, I said that the auction stats that I have seen. and I'm sorry I can't say I watch them every night (Insert question on life's priorities here) However I did say that the total landed cost to get them here and road ready is about 8K max. I definately don't think that that is a ridiculous statement. Now, let's relax, and have a cup of tea

I think this thread has run its course, but thought I would post a rough estimate of what the super excede I bought last night will cost ,
$4500 purchase price
$600 FOB
$1500 Container to New Westminster
$1200 Brokerage/destuffing/agri inspection...
$150 to get to the island after going over to get it.
$175 inspection
$500 New tires with psi rating on side walls.
$300 Change timing belts, new oils, fluids
$250 Set of E13 coded headlights
the $4500 + $600+$1500 = $6600 USD converted at June 20 rates =7,021.32 CAD
$7021.32+250+300+500+175+150+1200=$9596 with out regisration and tax when its final reg is done
I know this may sound like beating a dead horse, but you give the impression that a quality delica is dirt cheap and importers (comercial or private) are making a killing. this van will cost me 10k IF i dont have any unexpected problems and those always pop up. The demand here in Canada has actually driven up the cost of them in japan. So ya, some vans can be road ready for 8k, but certanly not all of them and that price is more intune with prices 6 months ago or even a year ago.

I agree completely...this thread has run it's course. If nothing else though it certainly illustrates the law of supply and demand...how prices have increased, and my finely tuned ability to buy high! Lol.

I just checked that one out, it's well worth it - it's grey over black, the nicest color combo out there.
Thought this one is sweet for 10,500 -

this is a repost from an earlier thread where the same subject came up...if you can not afford a high-end delica, why are you bitching about the price?

Location: Calgary Alberta couple of points i would like to make:
what made Land Cruisers so valuable was not only their reliability but their uniquness and rarity. Land Cruisers flooded the market when this craze started. The LJ series killed tainted the reputation of the Land Cruiser with the heads dying on a frequent basis. (do NOT buy a LJ or LN Toyota)
when i started importing Cruisers you could pick up a nice HJ61 for $3600 and now the HJ61 in premium shape will fetch $12,000 in Japan.
the highend Delica has quadrupled in price since i started importing them and the ultra-highend Delica fetch huge money. the 2 you are chatting about were wanted by other dealers in Canada so the bidding went up and up and up to a record high selling price for Delica in Japan.
delica with spoiler:
7800 purchase price (with auction fees and shipping in Japan)
300 pre-shipping prep
2600 Shipping by container (X2 units 5200)
300 destuffing charges (X2 units 600)
520 rail
75 trucking
165 OOP inspection
100 appraisal (appraised at $22,000)
54 registration fee
350 CD/MP3 player install
300 pyro install
650 new tires
450 new oversized exhaust
500 detailing and rust proofing
+ 20% profit
= $16,996.80
if we can not make at least 20% profit then we will shut the doors. there is a HUGE difference between a low end or middle of the road unit and the ultra highend units.
if anyone feels we are gouging the customers then i am very sorry.
(ooops, forgot to add to the list):
DOT head lights $450,
DTRL $60
and of course a portion of the profit goes towards running IVOAC

I would like to bitch about the fact that I can't afford a 70 series, with a 4.2L and locking diff's, right now. Good incentive to get a job.
Think every body around here would agree Wayne that a low mileage, premium unit you sell are well worth it. It just takes one really quick look to discover that nothing exists on the market, domestically, in quality and utility to what you get for your money for a flawless Cruiser or Delica - not even factoring in the 'drool' factor of sweet, sweet JDM's.
What created this little distension is those of us (see the gray item below) that purchased low grade rigs years back to use and slightly abuse, and on top of that brag about how little we paid for our rig. The few that ruin it for the many.........
Cheers,
Kev

LOL!!
yah, you don't see me driving a high-end unit either...not with my 2 huge hairballs...
I laugh when people can say they can get a Delica in Japan landed and registered in BC for $10K that compares to a $18K unit. If you can do it so be it... i would LOVE to see it happen.
the one i will change into an off road unit will be a lower end unit as well... why do up a premium unit to scratch and dent in the bush??

I'm all for the profit that the dealers make, you guys are providing a valuable service in that the consumer (me) doesn't have to spend countless valuable hours on the phone fax and email to find a good quality vehicle. If you say that thing is worth 19k then I shall bow to your experience and knowledge and sleep well knowing that the 12k superexceed I have is a good deal. Regards,

I don't think Crushers is saying that at all, I think he is just setting the record straight on the costs to import. Most costs appear to be mostly fixed, with the biggest variable cost being the purchase price in Japan.
With every one that gets shipped here, the supply in Japan gets lower, and the demand is increasing here in Canada, so it's no wonder that auction prices are going up.
The Delica in question, from the one small picture and the vague description, who could tell what it is really worth? I really doubt it is work $19K, after all, it is being sold by a dealership, and have you ever heard of a car dealership that didn't try and overcharge it's customers?
