Does it really get this . . . uh . . . bland in the 97 update. Thankfully the styling of the D:5 looks promising, although it's quite a long wait for that.

Yeah, it pretty much just turns into a RHD Honda Odyssey. Pretty boring...almost as boring looking as the L400

All of those are 2wd except for the 2nd one. And yes they are as boring as ......BUT ... Have a look here...

Much better eh? For the record I do like the L400's and would gladly own one. But, I'm really glad to see how some of the D:5's are being modded in Japan. I sure hope were still able to import these when their 15 yrs comes up!

the series 2 isn't THAT different from the series 1... you just need to find a way to get a bull-bar on the front and I'm sure they'll look just fine...

Glad to be set straight on this, and that is a nice series two. I guess it's just like the L300s - so many variations - and some really ungainly 2wd versions. Jessie - you do have a nack for finding the good ones. When I'm ready for an L300 in the future, I will just wait for you buy another one, do all the upgrades, then jump on it when you sell it to buy something else.

and it's interesting how the hostility towards the L300***(edit I meant L400, from the L300 drivers)** has really mellowed a lot since they started arriving.

I almost think this Daihatsu 4WD would have been a better l300 "facelift" then then the l400

The step flexes when the small guy steps on it. I thing I would rip that from the chassis. Also while bud is entry in and exiting that van doesn't budge.

I really like these newer models.

The series 2 has a power step operated from the passenger sliding door...........

And if you shop around in japan you will find a bull bar that fits...........

They do a low one that goes to each corner with the bull bit in the middle coming halfway up the front and ready to accept up to four spots........... It also has parking pole mounts on each corner too.....

The only real difference between the series 1 and series 2 is the extension of the front end which means longer wings and the new front end including upgraded headlights, a few cosmetic differences inside and out that are barely noticeable and of course the tweaks in the engine compartment including a more efficient egr valve and a tweaked and learn-able auto box................

The running gear and rear end remain pretty much unchanged............

Unfortunately the prototypes always look way cooler than the production model. The Daihatsu would undoubtedly get watered down. This is what the D:5 prototype looked like

Just 'cause everyone else is drinking the L400 kool-aid, doesn't mean you gotta have a sip, Glenn.

Stay with your L300, and hold out for when a D:5 comes available.

"safety" you'll notice that no modern vehicles smaller than a city bus have a cab-over design anymore, it's really come about with the advent of crumple zones, you can't crumple safely if there's nothing in front of the passengers.

Now I don't for a minute think that the L300 was unsafe, but that's why you don't see cab-over designs anymore.
