Halfway through our vacation Bessie decided to crap out in the brake dep't. Need front brakes done, my question is, anyone know where in Tofino I can trust to touch my van? Or, am I best to limp back to Coombs and go see the ppl at CC Auto?
I still have 5 or 6 days here so I'm in no rush, just need a plan of action soon I think.
Also, are the parts and labor for a front brake job comparable to a domestic job?

what do you mean by crapped out? are they squealing because the feeler is touching? or something more serious, if it is just the squealing and the brakes still work fine I would take it to coombs.

Didn't hear squealers. Just went right to grinding on the left. Right side is still good, like if its gentle braking its ok, heavy breaking is 'grindy'.

you should be OK to get it to CCA - sounds like calipers. If it is only one side, several more days of driving probably won't be a big deal. I have heard that some of the LORDCO sourced calipers are crapping out, so maybe that is your issue.

Montero Gen I 1988 front calipers/pads/rotors

Those can be ordered via Lordco/Napa/Canadian Tire, etc...

If you are going down to Coombs, then gear down on the downhill sections.

Technically, if you time it right, you may never have to press on the brakes all the way there.

Grinding and pulling to one side is most likely your caliper is seized = new calipers.

Check the pads for uneven wear and the rotors for warping and thickness. The min. thickness is stamped on the edge of the rotor.

When you get brakes done, you always get both sides done. Always.

Pads come in sets of two (one per side).

Rotors, you always replace both sides at the same time.

Calipers you 'may' be able to get away with replacing one side only, but why bother.

The front brakes on Delica's are VERY important and the majority of brake/weight is on the fronts.

Calipers/Pads/Rotors should not run more than 500-600 for all the parts and roughly 200-300 for labor MAX.

If you're paying over 1,000 for that, it's too much.

And any mechanic can do it. Does not have to be Delica-specific.

Do the brake upgrade at the same time. I did it about 2 months ago, and I would recomend it if you have to do the work anyway.

Don't let the steering wheel freak out the brake guys: the brakes on these vans are not 'magical' because it's a RHD vehicle.

As jfarsang indicates, these are Montero brakes, so if you don't show up with the part numbers for the various pieces, tell the repairman it's a 1988 Montero and that should calm him down enough to find the necessary data in their computer.
