Any pro tips before I install my new t-stat today?

1. Drain coolant off rad and engine block. 14mm nut located on exhaust side of block.
2. Remove driver seat and engine cover.
3. Remove power steering pump.
4. Remove lower rad hose connected to thermostat hsg.
5. Remove and install thermostat.

Thanks mitsubc well noted. The snow/slush beneath the mule is excessive and I am posponing install for the moment. One thing I noticed on the new T-stat was the stamp 82 degrees. Russek quotes 88 degrees for the 2.4l. Will this still work?

82 degrees is the right thermostat setting for the 4D56 engine. Use only an original mitsubishi thermostat to avoid any complications. It's about $30 for a new one.

Just a word of caution, you have to use a big pan underneath the mule when you take the 14mm plug off the engine block to avoid any spillage on the street. That won't be good for the planet

And while you're at it, you might as well check the condition of your radiator core. Take a peek inside while the coolant is off and see if you have a clean or scaled off core??

..yes, make sure you test it in some boiling water first. Just had CVI replace mine twice for faulty thermostats. Temp would rise too high before it would fully open. These were OE Mitsubishi ones so be carefull. It can happen.

...just to clarify..mine may not have been just the thermostat..CVI still searching for the real culprit, if anyone can find it, they will.

well. if you have problem with overheating issue. even after you change radiator & thermosthat.
check if water pump is good no leak. then the next step is to check your cylinder head. maybe you have a crack cylinder head, or a leaky head gasket. as you know maybe they overheated it in japan.
try to do this & it will cure your problem.

Thanks Mardy. I am doing this as preventative medicine.

CVI did the "Goofy Van" last week, along with belts, seals, and a appropriate adjustments. Now I actually have to turn the heat down , and my temp gauge reads more normal than just short of cold.

Also, as an added benefit, Butch noticed my clutch fan wasnt disengaging. Something I hadnt noticed. Did a swap for a newer one and the mileage went up, and the engine got alot quieter .
