Hopefully someone can offer me some help, because frankly I am at wits end.

I got a guy (Len at Automotion) here in edmonton to install a block heater in my Delica,
supposedly the one I bought wasn't good enough, so he installed a "circulating" block heater.
Even when plugged in and with diesel additive to prevent fuel freezing I can't get my Deli started,
in -10, yet alone -20 and below. It's not the battery, and I tried other recommendations from
the forum.

Hopefully someone out there can offer me some advice to get my frozen van started. I do realize
that I need an Oil Change to put in winter oil, but I can't even do that, since the sucker won't
even budge.

Hopefully someone can help me out.

Does that include new glow plugs?

My glow plugs seem to be doing fine I hear them go and let them
charge a few times before starting... i imagine if they need replacing,
they simply don't work... correct me if I am wrong.

The clicking you hear does not mean the plugs are working. Others can tell you how to test them, and there have been a number of posts you can search about glow plugs, but from what I know about the situation you describe, new ones will resolve your starting issue. Good luck and keep us posted

That may be the problem, but it seems at though everything is frozen solid.

Does anybody have Glow Plug part numbers, also where to get?
one more thing.. installation/changing of these, can anybody offer
me instructions... I am very new at this.

you're wrong

If it's the controller it will sound different, but if it's the plugs themselves the sounds will be the same whether they work or not.

They make a huge starting difference.

Perhaps though a better question is, how does it start at +10c?
Any thing that is a little problem at warm temperatures will become a HUGE problem at cold temperatures.

I am currently battling a starting problem of my own. I know it's not my battery (brand new and spins the starter at 500rpm for a LONG time), or plugs (brand new), or glow controller (it's putting voltage to the plugs). I'm suspecting injection pump, however I've had that looked at by a specialist here in Calgary (GCL Fuel Systems) who insist that everything is fine...
Unfortunately, in this weather, there is very little troubleshooting I can do with it, first because it's too cold to spend much time working on it, secondly because everyone will just blame the cold instead of fixing the problem, I happen to know it doesn't start right at +20, but I can't prove that at -25

I'm getting close to frustrated enough to take a road trip to CVI, I just wish I could get it fixed locally though!

Hey Wolfgang, I got my glowplugs through West end mittsi here in edmonton. Give them the part number ( from this site ) and they can get them in. Cost me $130. Check the votage at the plugs. My problem is I am only getting 9 volts to them, and after playing around I have lost power to the solinoid wire at the starter. Can any one point me in the right direction as to the start cuircut? I can also give you a hand if you need it.

the plugs draw a LOT of current, as such a low voltage reading (well bellow 12v) is normal, however if it is down as low as 9, I would suspect that your batteries aren't handling the drain as well as they possibly could...

unlikely, that box has 3 options, 0v (off) 6v (standard) or 12v (rapid) (12v tends to be more like 10.5-11 due to the current draw)
if it's not the batteries, i'd say likely a loose connection somewhere causing a voltage drop.

on a somewhat related note, I have been trying for a few hours now to get my Delica going... without being plugged in there was no hope, plugged it in for a few hours today and it still wouldn't go, but I noticed one of the terminals on the starter motor was glowing red hot, so I tightened that up, and it doesn't glow any more, and the starter seems to spin better... vehicle still won't start yet though, but I've got a battery charger on it now and I'll try again in an hour or so... (remember I have an other starting problem too, even in warm weather, so I may be overly optimistic...)

Starer conections are good, replaced the starter last week. When I was trying to start it I moved my block heaters ( magnetic between injection pump and head ) smelled a hint of burnt smell and there was no power to solinoid. Any ideas as to what there is in that area related to the start cuircit?

you're talking the fuel shut-off solenoid?

I think you're in to a part that I'm not overly familiar with...

No. No power to starter solinoid. a plug came undone burnt smell and no power after plugging back in. Is there a fuse for the start cuircit?
