Well I have done a search and come up with some stuff but no diffinitive answers......so I am canvassing for some help!

On the way home from my daughters swimming lessons (not that this matters) the glow plug relay (or whatever makes the clicking sound at starting) started going wild, clicking constantly. I was 3 minutes from home so brought it there. I have read that it could be the ECU, a relay or something.

Has anyone fixed this problem? as I have read there are a few out there that have had this issue

3 weeks into ownership. Did you buy it private or from a dealer ? If from a dealer, then it should be under warranty.

If not, then there are a few things to check.

The voltage at the glow plugs to make sure they are working.

If the ECU (glow plug control unit) is not working properly, most electronics shops will repair it for around $80-150.

The parts inside are common.

Yep 3 weeks, but it is OK I got it from a dealer and it is under warranty Mardy is going to have a look at it tomorrow, but I am just trying to learn something as I go. This is my first diesel and am unfamiliar with working on them so the more knowledge I get about trouble shooting the better. Thanks for the help, I love this forum.

What is your engine temperature indication? If it is erratic, then the two-wire temperature sensor is probably at fault. One side of that sensor goes to the dashboard, the other side goes to the ECU. If the sensor is faulty, the ECU thinks the engine is cold, fires the relays and that could be the clicking you're hearing. This is what happened to Moon Machine recently.

One of my Pajero's and the last Delica I had, had the same symptoms. It turned out to be some faulty capacitors on the ECU circuit board. Both were fixed without any issues.

Thanks for the piece of mind, I dropped the beast off at Mardi's shop just now and he is going to troubleshoot tomorrow. He mentioned the ECU when I spoke to him today, so sounds like he already has the same thinking as what you mentioned.......I just hope all is well. I have put 100 km per day driving to and from work since buying my Delica and they have been the most enjoyable miles I have ever put on.

It turned out to be ECU which Mardi swapped out with one he had in another bus, he left mine with me to get it redone at a local shop which he is going to provide me tomorrow.

the ECU or Electronic Control Unit is in the pillar behind the drivers seat. take off the plastic cover over the seat belt, unbolt the seat belt, take off the other plastic behind, and you will see the ECU. it is a gold or silver box.

Mine was doing a lot of clicking at one point as well, turned out to be the temperature sensor that was on top of the motor.

I would go with maramiesto 100%. Check this sensor first. Thru time, the internal resistance doesnt respond as quick until it conks out completely. The ECU - if faulty - will not trigger the relays...hence no clicking sound to begin with. Clicking sound is your relays actuating.
