1 March 2008, Meet/Fix Burnaby, Then CONVOY to the Stave Lake Forestry road,

Hi all, In response to requests to meet in the daytime. This coming Saturday 1 march 2008,

Meet-Up in Burnaby 9am to 10am. RAIN or SHINE. Bring spouses & kids.
Those wanting FIX-IT support can do this during the 9am to 10am MEET-UP time. Prize to "Most-Helpful Person" is a Mitsu-Maple Sticker or a Pirate Mitsu Sticker (donated by Mark the Admirable Admin Dude).

Then at 10:05 am, WE GOT US A CONVOY ! Convoy Drive via Highway 1 then Highway 11 to Stave Lake (located west of Mission, east of Alouette Lake). Drive a good Forestry Service Road, bring your own picnic lunch, back in Burnaby by 6pm. Details below.

This daytrip is a practice before we all go on Adrock's Harrison weekend at the end of March, as the road quality is very similar, just shorter distance.

I have listed various places to Join-in-the-Convoy / Turn-around-to-leave-the-Convoy spots, so if you only have an hour or so, you can still do a portion in the morning. JOIN THE CONVOY ! Rain or Shine.

Burnaby meeting spot TBA To Be Announced -- 3 choices. Tell me if you prefer
(A) fast-food and toilets, family friendly, or
(B) large quiet parking lot where we can mingle / fix but no food, no toilets.
(C) parking lot of auto part supplier (ie Lordco / Cdn Tire / Princess Auto) to do repairs.
Tell me number of Delica's & bodies expected to ensure we have a big enough parking area.

Please reply if you want to join in along the way, to exchange phone numbers (and VHF-marine radio channel if you have), by Friday 9pm. Rain or Shine !

Cheers, Christine and Jay of the Tardis Deli. :M

-------------------
Suggested Day Trip Stave Lake Forestry Service Road :

Trip based on today 24 Feb 08 reconnoitre trip by the 2 Delica's Falco Columbarius and TardisDeli. 1 hour via Highway 1 and Highway 11 from Burnaby to Stave Lake dam turnoff (end of paved road). Then 10 minutes on flat gravel road fine for 2 Wheel Drive, to the boat launch ramp (big parking lot, VIEWS, photo-ops, clean outhouse toilet). This is a turn-back spot for those who just want to do the CONVOY (or whose kids are bored), and meet-up for those joining for the forestry road drive. Note, the boat launch ramps are removed for the winter, so we won't be launching any boats.

Next, 45 minutes by wide flattish gravel road to the edge of the mud fields where the Stave Lake Idiot got his Delica carpets muddy (watch the youtube video --you go in to the mud, you get yourself out). Laugh as hardcore ATV & Mud-trucks get stuck. Admire the gorgeous mountain views, Park on the lake edge area (room for entire Deli-canation to park, and it looks so ROUGH when you photograph your Deli on the mud and snow fields), picnic-time and views. You might get there with 2 wheel drive and aggressive tires, but good chance to practice 4 wheel drive. This is turn-back time for people who can't spend whole day.

Now, after lunch, and dependant on rain / snow conditions, those who want to go further can join us taking the Florence Lake Forestry road. Probably takes a good hour each way. Climbs higher, still good road but with lots of little potholes, road still 2 vehicles wide but narrows on bends and single bridges, views -- feels really remote. This road often not open in summer, so now is your chance !! Anyone driving this section stays with the group at ALL times, the deli in front & behind you are in sight, and no-one is left behind -- if there is a breakdown we all stay together -- safety first.

Then, the whole thing in reverse. Once we leave the Florence Lake Road, and are back on the Stave Lake Road, you can leave the group if you want to drive faster.

Make sure you're ready for the trip, FILL up your tank (prior to joining as waiting for 20 deli's at the fuel stop will take hours), I used 30 litres today, automatic. Check tire inflation. Dress warmly to stand around chatting. Bring hot drinks, extra food. Bring all your emergency gear (if you have it then you won't need it).

Cheers, Christine and Jay, TardisDeli.

I haven't checked my schedule yet but I will try to make this work. I've been wanting to explore this area for a while now. I haven't really got anything mechanical needed but I'll bring some tools, and of course lots of tow straps and cameras :)

It looks like I am going to a "wine tasting festival" the night before and drinking 700 different wines or something so I'll be the pale guy with sunglasses on.

It all sounds quite fun exept this part:

This might take a while :-D

Hey Christine and Jay
Was Florence Lake still frozen over? I thought about stopping for a while to fly fish at Florence. Its a fly fish only lake and fishing can be quite good at ice-off.

So far I have nothing planned for this weekend. If it is somewhere close to Coquitlam (depending on time) I should be good to visit. I am not too interested in Stave Lake after though but the convoy will drive right past my house so I can break off then.
As for location, a quiet parking lot or somewhere with an outdoor park would work better for me and the kids.

Greetings from the Miss Lil' Bitchi,

Florence Lake was still frozen over Lazy Brown Fox, although I wouldn't recommend taking the Fox onto it ~ but the patterns in the ice were pretty, to be sure. The road is clear of snow.

I think I will be on this one, touch base with me later this week, Tardis Deli.

Falco.

P.S.: I vote for the car park of a Lordco/ Cdn Tire &c. ~ preferably with a Timmy Ho's near by. I hope Mararmeisto and the Moon Machine will grace our convoy... smiles.

I would absolutely enjoy attending this upcoming meet, but making that 7h ferry is getting to be a real bitch nowadays with the reservation-system BC Ferries has in place. Apparently, the whole ferry can be reserved now and the 7h usually is! At least from this side.

When I came over to get the trailer hitch from E&H Hitch, I pulled into the waiting lot at 5.40h and there were about 10 or 15 of us. I thought, "Awesome, should have no problem getting on, even if I am in the overheight lane." Ya, almost didn't make it on - second-to-last vehicle! No wonder I haven't left the Island by vehicle in years. I hate BC Ferries, but that's another thread...

Thanks for the invite. I do appreciate it.

If anyone has FRS/GMRS radios (the walkie talkies everywhere sells now) bring them along, I actually have 5 of them depending how many I can find around the house, I will bring them.

Should be a great field trip.. even if it rains we will be toasty warm in our vans :)

i wont be attending sadly, but did notice that the title only says up the "forestry road", you gotta take it right down in the mud pit if the lake is low( whitch it probably isnt).i spent an whole weekend in the pissing rian just beating the ass outa the deli out there (and didnt sink it like certain "brothers" have).

Hi All,
Just a reminder the CONVOY is on Rain or Shine (in our cozy toasty warm Delicas). This Saturday 1st March.

Meet first from 9 to 10am, then those who want to CONVOY leave 10:05 am from the Willingdon southbound freeway entrance.

Coaxial is foraging to bring his FRS Family radios, and we will have our VHF marine radios, so bring along yours. Great to communicate as we're running on the highway: hey what's your rpm on your tach , is your fuel pedal all the way down or do you have some leeway, what does your speedometer say (varies by tire size), so you can find out if your deli is running efficiently.

Questions? Want to meet up the convoy en route? PM me.
Cheers, Christine of the Tardis Deli. :M
