Manual transmission issue

Hey there,
I’m brand new here, saw an ad for a 1992 converted starwagon 5-speed diesel. Listed was a problem in first gear, it seems to not want to lock into it. If I hold it in I can start it gently, but if I try and start it too fast it keeps trying to spit it out of first. I decided to take a chance on it. So I drove it home basically bypassing first gear and she drove pretty smooth, I want to get it looked at right away but I’m realizing these rarely come in 5-speed manual and don’t know who to take it too. I’d like to try and figure as much out as I can without going into a shop. Anyone have any recommendations on what I should do? Any help is much appreciated,
