Does it need to be rebuilt?

Post by fishnchips654 »

I have a 95 L300 4x4 with 260 000kms on it, its got a 4D56T in it. Whenever i start it up, it smokes blue until it gets up to temp. Why is it burning oil like that? Worn piston rings?

Thank you

Blue smoke does sound like worn piston rings. You'll need to do a compression test: 440psi when cranking is ideal, the lowest limit is 320psi, with no more than 20psi difference between any two cylinders.

If the compression is ok it could be failed valve stem seals, or a slightly leaky turbo.
Nothing says "poor workmanship" more than wrinkles in the duct tape.

thanks for the help. Do you know what the price range to get something like this fixed would be?

It's hard to say how much a repair will cost until you know what's wrong. Guessing what's wrong is a surefire way of spending too much money!
