I'm somewhat interest in a 1995 Delica L400 with a 2.4 litre gas engine (4G64 I4) but I can't find many reviews on line. The Wikipedia article on this engine gives the most info I could find. I do understand that it will be less power than a V6 gasser but I not into heavy duty 4x4ing but rather toodling along forest service road and using it for a daily driver around town. Any input would be helpful, thanks!

Hi Sam
My second delica was a 4 cylinder gasser. Yup same as what you're describing. I sold it and bought a 3 liter gasser just cuz I wanted a better highway vehicle. Now I haul heavier loads, pull trailers and have more power on the highway.
I'd give the 4 cyl a 9/10 and the 6 cyl 9.5/10. Fuel mileage was better with the 4 cyl. If I remember correctly the 4 cyl gasser has more hp than the diesel.
The drive trains and suspension are (almost) the same on all years, be it 4 or 6 cyl, gas or diesel. You'll enjoy the 4 cyl, I did.

Thanks so much "thelazygreenfox":
This makes me feel so much better. I was really looking for an around town, local trails and heading up ski hills vehicle along with the occasional beach or lake visit. I'll see the van soon so I"ll look at the condition. It's a new import and will need it's belts replaced according to the seller.

Hi Sam
Are you buying off the japanese auction block or from a "dealer" her? Any dealer worth their salt here will change the timing belt and do all the headlight/tire/brakes/alignment changes etc before they sell it. Check it out carefully. There are a few shady dealers out there.
FYI New headlights are $450 a pair. They must be changed to satisfy can law and point to the right hand side of the road vs left in japan. Alignment need changed because the van points to the opposite side of the road (crown).

thelazygreenfox,
Thanks for the questions! I planning on buying a private sale from a Japanese fella who has a friend in Japan who helps him buy vehicles. All fluids are changed. There is not a timing belt but rather a timing chain (Please correct me if this is not true). New tires, BF Goodwrench. He has taken to Marigold Automotive in Victoria to do the service he stated which is a reputable place from my research. It is plated with BC plates and therefore passed the inspection. This fella has been using it. From our conversation he appears to be a hobby importer; uses them for awhile and then sells them and keeps the ones he likes. Any other input would be greatly appreciated. FYI, this is not my first JDM vehicle. I had a 89 Surf for 13 years and my late husband had a SWB Pajero with a V6.

It's a belt, the rest sounds good. Enjoy your deli.
