looking for turbo help.

Hi there I have a 93 L300 with 130000km and have been having to replace almost all gaskets since getting it. It summer and is time to get it camping. I d like to do the work myself if possible but have never worked on a turbo before. So I'm looking for a turbo rebuild kit and if possible someone to give me a hand. I am a tattoo artist with 16 years experience and would be willing to trade a tattoo for some help. Perhaps a delica tattoo is needed. Let me know if this interests you. I am located just outside Vernon BC.

My l300 was my first turbo rebuild.
Really simple, just keep everything clean and organized, inspect for wear and damage as you go along and adhere to the torque specs and procedures listed in the 4d56t engine manual.

Well I decided to try and start my L300 up the other day before tackling the turbo removal and now it starts fine. This is what happened before...It was turning over and then dying as soon as the engine would kick in -all the while blowing heavy black smoke. This never happens. On external inspection I see there is a thin layer of oil throughout the turbo and surrounding area. Im about to take the hose off and see if the turbo has any play but first I just noticed that someone has removed a vacuum line and plugged it with a screw. I believe this vacuum line is going to the waste gate on top of the turbo. So my question is why would someone do this? Does this indicate another problem? Do you think I should reconnect it and take it for a spin or is this a bad idea. i did temporarily reconnect it and run the motor and all seems fine so far but I haven t driven it yet.
Upon removing the drivers seat I also noticed the hose going from the front to the Air filter Is missing( its about a foot long) Again is there a benefit to this hose missing?
Any advice would be great

The air filter hose/duct that appears to be missing is actually by design. I and many others wondered WTF on initial discovery. There are some good explanations for this. Search the forum for "duct missing".

You're probably looking at the EGR valve. The wastegate is larger, lower down, and right at the back near the firewall.

Hmm. I could have sworn this was in the FAQ. I've added it to the technical reference library now anyway.
