I was rushing to catch a ferry so let my diesel tank ('93 Pajero 2.8l) run down really low (warning light on and off). As I was heading to the gas station it felt like a clutch slipping as I tried to accelerate. This happened a couple more times but I made it to the station and filled up before the engine died. Then, on the way home from the station it lost power again for a moment but I could still get it home. It felt strong in 2 and Low but weak in Drive. I'm not sure what to do, or how dangerous it would be to keep driving.
Do I just run it and hope that the sludge filters out? Is it safe to try or will I do damage? Did I get some air in the system?
Please help. Thank you!
Mark

On the top of your fuel filter mount you should have a primer diaphragm (circle about the same size of a small milk cap). When a fuel filter is changed the primer needs to be pushed to get air out of the system. There should be a plastic butterfly with a clear hose coming out of it next to the primer diaphragm...open that 1 turn and then prime the filter until fuel comes out of the butterfly (aka air bleeder). That should fix your problem....best part of this fix is no tools are needed!
But the symptoms you describe sound like an EGR stuck in full open or a loose intercooler hose...the 2.8 runs like a bag of dirt when that happens.....easy throttle gets you going but any heavy pedal and it bogs down. Check your intercooler hose clamps are secure and then check the EGR. Usually pulling the EGR vacuum line and plugging the line with a screw will yield quick results.
