What are the stock speakers in a 98 L400 likely to be like? Looking more for sound quality here, as opposed to volume capabilities. Graham's putting in a new JVC stereo for me, but not touching the speakers. Will it be worth replacing these, or are these ones already decent?

If they are anything like the speakers in my '95 the stock speakers will be in sad shape. The paper cones on mine were partially disintigrated and rattled and buzzed and sounded awful. I would hope for the best but realistically be preparred to put new speakers in.

Hopefully that's not a big job. Maybe I should be asking as to somewhere that could do it for me, (and no, it ain't gonna be some kid making minimum wage at a Future Shop).

Mine were disintegrated. Paper cones gone to dust. Replaced them all. Took less than two hours for 6 speakers.

Is it easy to source new speakers and do the replacement yourself? Got recommendations for either speakers or for a reputable stereo place that is familiar with Delis?

Mine were/are turds. I replaced the two front dash speakers though and it made a HUGE difference. Took half an hour and sounds great. Those ones are the ones you hear the most when you are driving anyways. Start with those.

Pull the speakers you have and bring them with you when shopping. The first set of panel speakers I got were too deep to install in the van.

Good advice on both fronts...
