Does anyone know if drilling a hole in the area above the seat belt hardware (in the general area where the double headed arrow is) will cause any damage underneath? I picked up a cheap expandable curtain rod from Canadian Tire and thought if I drilled a hole on each side then the curtain rod would slide right in. This way, I could slide a privacy curtain across the front seats while sleeping in the back.
Thanks!

No problem , but be sure to use a sharp bit with the drill at high speed , older plastic can be brittle.
I would drill a tiny 1/8" hole first so you can use a wire prod to check the depth of the cavity.

Why not just take off the trim and check? And if there is some sheetmetal there put some nutserts in to support it?
Like this one for my rear webbing hanger on my 300:

Hi, I just took my interior out (repairing the sunroof) and here's a couple photos I took of the area of interest:

I couldn't get the plastic trim off the driver's side, so I can't tell you what's there. But beware, in both pillars, the only thing I know is in there are the drain tubes for your sun roof. Those are pretty loose, so if you touch them with the tip of the drill, they'll probably just bounce out of the way.

That said, maybe take the point off the screws so you're not introducing something sharp for the drain hoses to rub against.

its basically a rivet, and you can get a rivet gun to install it, I just use a bolt and a nut. Screw the bolt in with the nut spun on snd then hold the bolt head and tighten the nut against the rivnut/nutsert in its hole in the sheet. Like a rivet it has a shank which collapses down and clamps the metal between it and the shoulder on the outside. Its an instant captive nut! Just imagine a pop rivet that's threaded!
