Upgraded stereo/alternator question...

Hey guys, I'm just wondering if any of you have had alternator issues after upgrading to an aftermarket stereo, more specifically, with the addition of an amp?
The reason I ask, is because my wife had a brand new alternator put in her Pajero just over one year ago & it died the other day. The guys she brought it to specialize in alternators/starters & batteries & they said it was because the addition of an amp put too much strain on the alternator, which was only designed to supply power to the vehicles stock electrical system.
The amp she had installed was done professionally & it's only like a 600 watt amp, it's not like she's running multiple 1000 amps or anything.
It's a little worrisome, because I had a new stereo/amp setup installed as well & my amp is considerably larger wattage than hers is & I'm told the Pajero & Delica alternators are pretty much the same. Apparantley there is no aternator upgrade available either.
Any insight would be appreciated.
