Correlation between EGT's and smoking!?

I noticed earlier in my trip that as soon as my EGT's went over 1000 I could see a small amount of black smoke coming out of the tailpipe and the smoke would increase as the EGT's did. My pyro has since broken so now I am relying a lot on my water temp gauge but will also glance at my side exhaust especially on hills. I'd I line the exhaust up with the white line I can get a really good idea of what my EGT's are based on the correlation I discovered while comparing the two earlier in the trip. I can even view this at night thanks to my bright LED tailights and the white line. Just an interesting piece of information I discovered and maybe another way of justifying a side exhaust.

Cool story brah.
Historical fact: concentrating on his exhaust instead of the road ahead was the true cause of the death of Bruce Lee, not spiteful ninjas.

Black smoke is an evidence of "flash burn" AKA not extracting the full energy from the diesel. Mush like throwing a news paper on a fire it creates a lot of ash but very little energy potential. At least i think i remember correctly from my school days

Hey,
Yes smoke is excess unburned fuel which will show as higher EGTs
I did use the method you are talking about to keep it friendly through
mountains of interior BC,worked well.
Right On!
