Greetings all! After a couple of months of research, drooling and pining, and finally making a decision to ditch our Ford Windstar, we're in! Well, we bought a Delica anyways. I guess acceptance into the group comes later.
We bought our white-on-white SECLR from 5 Star Autos / Coombs Country Auto in Parksville, BC, partly because we didn't want to have to go to the continent to pick up our purchase and partly because we liked what we heard about the importers up-Island. There is a couple of importers here in town (Victoria), but their volume is too small to allow for much selection.
So, ours is a Super Exceed with Crystal Lite Roof (with a nifty roof rack which we've removed until we have need for it - otherwise we wouldn't be able to park downtown in the parkades). The AM/FM cassette radio is still set to the Japanese frequency range (will be changing that out in another week); the media controls in the back only seem to work the ON/OFF function (that will be removed with the new stereo); the front speakers don't seem to be connected (to be remedied next Saturday); there is a "cool/hot box" (importer had never seen one before) on the floor under the dash, in front of the engine bay which I imagine is for my sushi and rice lunch (haven't tried that yet, but the gasket seal is deteriorated and crumbling so that will have to be addressed). Of course, after repairs it will be the "wings and beer" box. The only other problem we've noticed on our 17-year-old new bouncing baby is the foam in the armrests in the rear is crumbling (we'll just get some foam from a furniture shop and change that ourselves).
Anyway, I'm a 19-year veteran of the Canadian Navy, and my lovely wife is a dental assistant in the Army (it's not her fault, only the Army would take her). I'm proudly serving with the submarine fleet these past four years, after 15 years in the surface fleet. And yes, after looking in most of our mouths, she would definitely say sailors do have filthy mouths.
We look forward each day driving about in our new toy. Every single day to work this week (after receipt on Sunday), which isn't bothering us too much considering the 10 or so litres per 100kms. Actually, I think it gets about the same fuel economy as my VW Cabriolet (which is feeling a little slighted this week, sitting there in the driveway). I'll have to take it out this weekend before it slinks off on its own.
And I will have to draft up some informational cards or pamphlets before too much longer - my throat is getting hoarse explaining all the features, benefits, capabilities, our enjoyment and excitement driving it and the indescribable "Delica-ness" of the vehicle to practically anyone who manages to say, "Just what is that thing?" We've also got a name for it as well: the "Moon Machine" because the insurance lady commented that it looked like something from the space program. I'm going to get a big CSA (Canadian Space Agency) sticker for the back window and mount a CANADARM on the roof!
