Just completed 3450 km trip in a 91 Pajero!

I just got back from a road trip in my 2-door V24 Pajero.
Calgary to Winnipeg and back, with a week of Winnipeg city driving in the mix.
3454 kms
394 Litres of diesel
works out to 20.6 MPG.
On the highway, I averaged 120 km/h, and in the city it was fairly hard driving with lots of pedal to the floor. No noticable MPG difference in the city vs. the highway. I did notice one tank of fuel where I averaged 130 km/h (about 3900 RPM), fuel economy dropped to about 17.5 MPG.
I'm pretty happy with the mileage overall - is 20.6 MPG in line with what others are getting out of the 2.5 Turbo Diesel?

20.6 MPG (11.42 L/100km) is exactly what I'm getting at this moment after 4,513 km (2,804 mi) and 515.5 L (136.2 gal) in my automatic Delica, injection timing hasn't been done and I live in a hilly area, so it could improve.
I would expect the Pajero to do a bit better, but I don't know what the weight difference is, I'm assuming the van is heavier.

I've done 3554 km on 490.6 litres since I got my Delica two months ago. The overall average is now at 12.4 L/100km; 22.7 mi/UK gal; 18.9 mi/US gal.
I'm smoking quite a bit right now, plan to get injection timing done in a week. And plan to put some injection cleaner through it too.

Hi Ruminante,
Let us know where you get your injection timing done, how much it costs and if you have a noticeable improvement in fuel economy. I'd like to know how it is that some people are getting 30+ mpg out of their Delicas. Mine is still in Japan, but I should be able to pick it up in November.

I'm sure it will hurt. Because I'm getting the timing belt and "block heater" done too. I'm supposed to get an estimate first so I should have some idea.
Some of the 30+ might be due to odometers being out. I know my odometer and speedometer still read low by 1.5%, even though I've got much larger than stock tires on it. But I would like to improve my economy and reduce my smoking.

I thought people weren't having much success with block heaters. Or was it just that they were very complicated to install?

That's why I put "block" heater in quotes. It's actually a "lower rad hose coolant" heater.

Okay, that makes sense, let me know how that goes as well as that's something I'll be wanting to do to mine when I get it.

I cannot repeat your mileage calculation. 3450km and 394 litres is about 11.5 litres/ 100kms or 24.5 mpg (is my math correct?) I have a Pajero 91 four door. It gets about that around town and in the bush, about 10l/100km commuting and about 9l/100km on the highway running Shell premium diesel.

Close enough. Actually 11.42 L/100km and 24.7 mpg (imp.) or 20.6 mpg (US)
I'm now at 12.8 L/100km over the 2 years and 40,000 km.
BTW, anyone reading this thread, block heaters are no longer a problem, the part number has been figured out (Temco 30-3217-6), and I've got one. Installation on an automatic transmission L300 Delica isn't the easiest, but doable. On a manual it is much easier. Search the site for more details.
