A/T Temp Warning

Two weeks ago I got a A/T temp light on after about an hour of running errands. All city driving, no extra load or towing, and all at less than 80kph. The Tranny's performance was not noticably different at any time prior to the A/T temp warning.

The next day I checked the fluid, both level and colour were OK. I also pressure washed the two lower outboard radiators.

I've never seen that warning before, and I haven't seen the warning again, but I've also never sustained 100kph for more than 10 minutes since that day, or done as much city driving.

Is the A/T more likeley to overheat during city driving rather than highway driving?

I have a 1.5 hour highway trip planned quite soon. (and 1000s of km of highways this summer)

Assuming this isn't just a one-time incident, what charactaristics should I be looking for that might indicate a developing fault?

Thanks.

Nearly a month later, the warning hasn't popped up again.

I'll still keep an eye on it, but everything still seems normal.

I have had my A/T warning come on once only. After driving for an hour I came to a steep hill at speed and decided to downshift to assist my brakes. I think I was going a bit too fast to downshift and my warning light came on.

Any chance you were lugging the engine (ie driving uphill with the rev RPM too low for the amount of weight you were carrying, or the steepness, or the external temperature).

Its not a usual problem. I once had it happen, quickly read the book which says NEVER Turn off the engine till the temp returns to normal and light goes off, just put it in nuetral (not park) with brake on and wait about 5 minutes for fluid to cool down. Never happened again. No problems after. Fluid was fine (happily pinkish).

That occurred when we were on a delica group trip, going uphill to one of our local offroad secret camping spots, the road is in good condition (because nobody knows about it) so we were just driving slowly in normal 2WD watching the views. Suddenly my AT light came on, but no odd sounds or noises or smells. The delica ahead of us had been in 4 low, so that's why we had been driving so slowly, which obviously was not a happy speed.

Cheers, Christine.
