Re: PTO anyone?
Out of curiosity, has anyone in this club ever dissected a Delica/Paj transfer case?

Re: PTO anyone?
Looking on line Paj are twin sticked all the time.
I am not talking about the gear selector. I am talking about it being a dual rail internal shifting transfer case. This means it can most likely be twin shifted and has a neutral spot. That is two shifters Front H-N-L and Rear H-N-L. They do not come from the factory this way as you can put them in H and L at the same time bad, bad, bad. Most 4x4 people add twin shifters to dual rail cases.
Why does it have a PTO port and pictures of the shaft under the port shows a PTO gear. It can be modded for a neutral. This means different gear selector.
Here is my last build: http://bb.bc4x4.com/showthread.php?1232 ... C170-Build. That was a major mod (6 months). (Jeep Frame, Mercedes turbo Diesel and auto, divorced transfer to Dana axles from a Dodge, every piece made).
Personally, if I had the transmission out & trans case to do the clutch. I would see modding the transfer case as 1 day job. And two days to build a shifter.

Re: PTO anyone?
I am liking Thedjjack's "major mod" project... I can kinda see why he likes Delicas. An unusual rig to say the least.
I would like to see this thread progress beyond the Punch and Judy Show though (yes it can, no it can't) because, being in the design industry, I know that invention happens as a result of dialogue beyond a simple "it can't be done".
Yes, it may take a "major mod" to accomplish this but by saying it will involve a "major mod" is saying "it is possible" so I think this thread would be GREATLY useful if the dialogue were to continue into "how can this be accomplished" realm. Perhaps the conclusion will be that this is simply not "realistically possible" (still possible but not for the faint of heart) to do in the end but at least we will all be satisfied that we have done "the problem" justice and at least investigated it instead of taking "no" as an answer.
Would I have a use for a PTO? Probably not. Would it be cool if there is a way to be able to utilize one if I decided I had a use for one? Yup!
So... I say, let the dialogue continue on a creative path. Let's see where it leads - I am finding it an interesting read.
My 2 cents duly and respectfully inserted in the SD slot in my computer.
Cheers!

Re: PTO anyone?
I agree with you absolutely. I personally, can not think of any reason why I would ever want a PTO on my Delica- but when I saw this old thread, it looked interesting, and like you said, I'd like to see where it COULD go...

Re: PTO anyone?
This transfer case is used in many variations of Delica/Pajero/ect... plus who knows what other vehicles. Not all are people movers, some are dump bodies, bucket trucks, small cranes. All would need hydraulics to operate. Mitsubishi would be stupid not to have put a pto option in there somewhere. It may be possible to retro fit my transfer case to run a pto, maybe
not cheap or practical but certainly possible. Think of all the cool mods you could do with a small hydraulic pump on there!

Re: PTO anyone?
Why are you that 100% sure about this subject? Have you ever tried it? There are guys on the German Delica forum using that port for a winch: http://www.4x4travel.org/phpBB3/viewtop ... 36&t=10560Green1 wrote: There may be a port that looks like it possibly could maybe almost be a place that could sort of possibly lead to a method of installing a PTO, but it is NOT a PTO, it is NOT a place you can easily add one, and it is NOT helpful in any way, shape, or form to someone wanting a PTO accessory.
Adding a PTO requires a new transfer case at a bare minimum, probably also some finagling to fit a non-delica transfer case in to a delica. this I would consider a major mod.
You don't have to change the transfer case to add neutral. Apparently adding neutral to the l300 transfer case is not that "major". You need to add another shifter though.

Re: PTO anyone?
Fexlboi's post is VERY interesting indeed!
I wish I could read German to fully understand this because I do notice on the first picture that the transfer case shifter (proper) has an "N" between 4L and 4H. The second shifter has a low-teck lock-out and may be the shifter for the PTO itself (?) hence the "on" and "off" notation rather than "D" and "N". The console does look like it belongs to a Delica tho without the window switches in it.
The obvious answer would be that neutral was added and the knob itself was changed to reflect that mod.
Again, though, I notice the T-case shift sequence is different (reversed) from what we are used to... could that be a right-hand-drive, left-hand-drive difference?
Certainly seems a step in the right direction so far! Keep it comin'!

Very interesting, anyone willing to eat their words, or is that a "no way, no how, never, not a chance" kind of issue?

I had a thought one time about having a winch run off of the transfer case with a double spool with hooks running fore and aft. Fore, in the event that you nearly got through; and aft in the event that it was a bad choice in the first place. Turns out that this wasn't a unique idea and has been done by many groups, including military. At the time I had the thought I never really pursued the idea as I knew mechanics like I know the back of Fexlboi's hand and I had also other things to take care of. Now I am getting a little better at it, so getting braver. Who knows, maybe next year.

Re: PTO anyone?
I had a PTO winch on our land cruiser.
On the mitsu's there is a port that can be used with the addition of the PTO drive on the Monty/Delica tcase. Where you would find a compatible one is beyond me.
The second obstacle is layout. To have a functional PTO drive with a winch mounted up front on an L300 would take some serious fabrication.
It would be doable but I would say it's only doable for someone with time, fabrication skills and willingess to tear into the driveline and metal/body of their Delica.
This is not a simple plug n' play option.
I tore apart 3 mitsu tcases and they are robust. I never came across one with a PTO drive on it.
In the past 20 years, since our family owned a monty and knowing fabricators who played with theirs including portal axles from a mog, I have yet to see a single working PTO.
This type of project is what's called a dreamers project due to what I listed above.
With that said it can be done. Anything can be done.
It's always limited to time/money and limitations.

Re: PTO anyone?
Not a winch up front ~ a hook, up front. And a hook coming out the back. Both hooks attached to cables that are attached to a double spool set up under the van with, I presume, some sort of gear shift between spools. People get trained to do these sorts of things in the military, alone. Look at the Russian stuff that comes out ~ three vehicles made into one. We happen to be people. I don't see why someone couldn't learn to do this sort of stuff if they wanted to.

P.S.: Regarding Fexlboi's German club: http://translate.google.ca/translate?hl ... ravel.org/
At the bottom right of your screen you will see "Zum Forum". Click on that.
Now scroll down to "Under The Car" (Unter Dem Auto); go to page four (at the time of this posting); about five or so lines down and you see "PTO L300" (Zapfwelle Am L300). Click on that.

Re: PTO anyone?
So far in my searches, I have found that the first Generation Pajeros (pre-1990) were offered with optional factory PTO winches. I have found a number of references to this and there is one fellow on the Pajero owners club in the UK that actually has one.
Falco's video with the Pajero is a good one. The other, a Mitsu jeep. Presumeably they all use the same T-case case for the reasons mentioned earlier in this thread (commonality).
What I haven't yet found is a lot of mention about Delicas or Gen 2 Pajeros. I had seen one line on one of the forums that did mention the requirement of a lot of fabrication for Gen 2 Pajero but, again, can't find any significant discussion on the subject. I would guess this is likely because of the use of the electric winches and their relative ease for install and cost too.
We had PTO's when I was in the military - mostly on the bigger stuff. Jeeps were in transition at that time... CJ's were being phased in (with a plethora of rollover warnings) temporarily ahead of the "German things" but that's another story for another day.
