Can the filter be replaced without the use of a vice? What could I use instead without damaging any parts?

I usually use my hands, seriously. One time I came across a fuel filter where I needed to us a pair of channel lock pliers to loosen off the water trap ~ usually with mine I just unscrew.

When you take it off be aware that it's full of diesel, eh? Unscrew the filter while over a container, such as a plastic washing up basin.
