Never happened to me on the 5spd and I've been in -40C this winter.

It's stiff at first, but after 5 mins of warming up the engine, he's good to go.

I did have issues getting out of park in my previous auto last winter when it got really cold.

I've owned mostly manual transmission vehicles but a few autos as well. 5spd delica is same as any other stick shift I've owned, aside from it being on the left, which I picked up as quickly as I did sitting on the right - within an hour of driving it was 2nd nature. Only thing that took me a while to master was the turn signal lever and wipers being switched around :) A dozen people have tried driving my van that have never driven RHD before.. no stalls, no trouble at all. I think the no stalling has a lot to do with it being a diesel.

In -30 the shifter, clutch, and brake were all a little bit stiff but entirely usable. After switching to synthetic dot4 brake/hydraulic fluid (clutch and brake use the same fluid/reservoir) it was hardly even noticeable.

Upsides to manual transmission are numerous and common knowlege.

Downside is something like 3000-3500RPM at 100km/h, I think that is about 500rpm+ higher than the auto, I get 20mpg on highway but if I go above 100-110km/h or so it plummets quickly.

My girlfriend wasn't a fan of driving a manual at first (she had to learn on the delica) but now she prefers it.

josh, you suck because you got the good 5 speed.

I am going to explore all the possibilities of getting a new 5th gear. Its not different enough from 4th to even be there in my opinion. and extra 7-8km/h for the rpm or so. 31s only get you so far and lifting it to fit bigger tires gets costly.

That said, I have an amazing dog, and i wouldn't trade her for the world. And my manual is way better than the auto my boss bought that I drove around all day. But mine has a charm all its own, its not just the transmission. Theres a bit less of a buffer between you and the road, its nice.

Your 5th is actually lower than mine? double checked today and cruising along at a measly 100km/h means 3000rpm+ and 10lbs of boost. If I go any faster than that I think trap door opens on the fuel tank and it just dumps out? :?

Oh well, 22mpg overall avg is still not too shabby. I've had much worse mileage in much less fun vehicles.. try putting a 4barrel racing carb on an oldsmobile delta88 with a 350 V8

Sounds good, also a pretty epic undertaking...

You could change the post title to "I like my 5-speed Delica, but" :-)

I don't want to drive 140 kph or anything,100-110 at a happy sounding RPM (2700-2900)
would be swell for road trips . My engine just sounds good around that RPM ,like "Grocery store or Guatemala, no worries man!"

Right on! 8-)

JOsh I thought you said you were doing 120 at around 2800-2900 or something... I remember not believing you, but then Mardy said something about there being 2 manual transmissions. One I would assume is geared better. haha, I guess you're not better off...

I suppose it is possible but some how doubt that any of the readily available MTs will do 120 at 2800. 120 In the MLB is 3 grand (on the level in OD).

Falco.

Miss a Delica; but many years RHD made driving a 5 speed on the left side of the road easy as pie.

BUT, our 2wd 3L TD pick up is a different beast; third can be used for rolling stops and up to 80 km/h, and cruising at 110 km/h at 2100 rpm is quiet – but where is the fun/ the love? We’ve had have had our Nissan p/u for three months now, and despite the great economy there is just not much charm to the vehicle – just a tool to do the shopping once a week. Heck even the 2,3 market runs a week are done on 2 wheels cause it’s more satisfying – I should be posting a picture of how much produce Randi can fit on a scooter.

You should be liking your 5 sp Delica Jesse.

(and what I like about this forum - nobody chastised Golf Cart for naughtiness. See a forum like http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/ for a a high population of trolls.)

In reading this thread it sounds like there are two different gearing options for the manual transmission. My 5th is notably different from 4th and I cruise at 110 kph at ~3100 rpm.

Also - MT and MLB? What are you guys referring to?

OK - got the MT one while heading our for a mountain bike ride - a little slow this morning. I don't think I would have got the MLB one, though!
