Problem solved.
It's amazing how consulting the wiring diagram can help solve electrical problems (duh!). After fiddlling with the connections at the fuse panel for a couple of nights, I went to the Wiki site and looked at the PDF of the wiring. There was a common power supply that was effecting the systems that were down and when I jumped the headlight power independantly, I could hear the relays working and the lights powered. Since the wires themselves rarely cause a problem as they are protected most of the way, it had to be either the fusable links or a 'connection' somewhere. The fusable links tested OK so I removed the batterries as the diagram showed a connection somewhere after this. As luck would have it, there is a connection after the links and before the wires exit the battery bay. There was my cooked connector. I jumped it and the systems powered up.
So easy when you look back at it. 20/20 hindsight is great!
Thanks for all the help.
Here are some photos: Initial view with a bit of a brown tinge to the connector. Note the bare wire entering the housing.
Connector melted and had to be sacrificed!
Medium rare.
