Lost power. Max 50km/h

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Lost power. Max 50km/h

Post by Sureshot »

My 91 starts fine doesn't make any strange noises but it seems the engine has lost most its power. Doesn't matter if I gear down or not. The max I can go is 50km/h on the flats. Any ideas?

Thanks

When my turbo went there was no difference in noise just zero power and quite a bit of black smoke as I recall. Probably not what you wanted to hear.

Hard to believe it's only the turbo as there is also a non-turbo version engine and I assume you can go faster than 50km/h.

I think the issue is that when your turbo goes it messes up the timing of fuel injection blah blah bah or something to that effect. It has to be something like that because that is what happened to mine.

As for cost I'd call Coombs and ask if they have a working used one or over to Mardy. I had Glen in Coombs put in a working used one and I think the job was around $300ish. It was way less then I thought it was going to be. A new one will be pricey though.

have a good diesel mechanic check to see if the timing belt skipped a tooth

Hi,
With me the actuator rod had come of the linkage to the turbo. This gave me the same symptoms. Five minutes with some wire saw it fixed. Hope it's something easily & cheaply sorted!

When I bought a Landcruiser a couple of years ago I couldn't get over 3K RPM out of it, turns out the feul filter had not been change for years and it was choked with crap, new filter and it felt like a new motor.

what jfarsang said - get your timing belt checked - when mine slipped a tooth I could only hit 50 kph max - this does not sound like a turbo related issue.

lots of possibilities. DO NOT DRIVE it until you fix it as motors are expensive!

Fuel leaks (air sucking into fuel lines) will drop power too. Van will usually run at low revs but not get up to any major speed, and power will drop off as you drive but van will not make any bad sounds and likely idle fine as the lower fuel demand won't draw so much air into the lines. You might see fuel under the van where you park but not necessarily at first. The 300 I had had a fuel leak at the pick-up unit on top of the rear tank but no leak showed up until a few days later. I ordered a whole new tank from Glen at CCAuto, he overnighted it to me and I installed it in the driveway (inexpensive and relatively easy). Was as good as new after that.

Just wanted to suggest another option instead of the dreaded dead turbo.

Good luck!

Don't worry. my bet is one of 2 simple fixes. But dont drive much till fixed. Turbo isnt needed for delica, the camper version from factory has no turbo, just runs slower.

My bet:
Does it shift gear, or does it sound and feel like you're still in first gear. If so, then the tiny little cotter pin connecting your accelerator needs replacing, sits to passenger side of the engine head, sits on top of the other stuff so very easy to get to. Is attached to long cable, with sort of coloured round blobs of plastic, that when you press the accelerator causes this blobby bits to move and pushes accelerator to speed engine revs. If this blobby bits dont move, then the teensy tiny half inch cotter pin on underside has broken. Replace with cotter pin, or bit of wire, or paperclip for now. You actually are running in first gear only. Butch at CVI showed us this problem at last years annual meet there, this is true for automatics, dunno about manual.

My second bet: Just replace your air filter (test theory by removing air filter, see if problem changes). Is it hard to start, if so this could be it.

Cheers, Christine.
