Turbo problems ? Read here before taking it to a shop

Post by jessef »

I'm leaving the service shops names out.

There are shops that claim they rebuild turbo's.

Apparently the term 'rebuild' can mean anything from a simple cleaning, replacing the oil seal, replacing parts all the way to replacing internal parts and balancing each part with precision and then doing a live test.

If you want to have your turbo working like it should (brand new), then do yourself a favor and question the shops you're considering having your turbo rebuilt at.

Most honest shops that I know of, outsource the turbo rebuilding to a dedicated turbo shop that specializes in turbo's. Turbo specialty shops use specialized balancing machinery to calibrate and balance the turbo from inside out.

Next time when you get a quote for a turbo rebuild, ask them if they replace the shaft, bearings, seals, impeller and balance it with equipment specific to turbo components.

A real turbo rebuild will cost around 6-700 for a Delica.

600-700 with re and re?

If so what is the ball park if I pull the Turbo and take it to a rebuilder?

It is on my list as mine is leaking a little oil and at 175,000km a rebuild is not a bad idea.

Cheers

I would guesstimate that over 50% of delica's out there don't have their turbo's working at it's proper capacity to move air.

The 6-700 quote is not a removal/rebuild/install.

It's what I paid the turbo specialist shop to rebuild them. Once rebuilt, it's as if the original turbo was not even working at all. The 3 vehicles (2 pajero's and 1 Delica) that I had the turbo's rebuilt were like overweight pigs. After the rebuild they were zippy.

I use the cut up the highway in north van as my benchmark.

Pre-turbo rebuild, they were maxing out at 75-85 km/hr with a good run at the bottom.

Post-turbo rebuild, they accelerated up past 100km/hr without the run at the bottom.

I'm going to have to get mine rebuilt (L400) as the impeler shaft has about 1/8" play on it which throws the balance off.

People across the country send theirs to ADP in Port Kells Langley.

They are considered 'the' turbo specialists in Canada.

They use a balancing machine to calibrate the turbo parts. It's worth about $400,000 USD.

Think any other shop will have that kind of specialized equipment ? Probably not.

The stipulation is you drop off the turbo on it's own and pick it up when it's done.

When you get your turbo rebuilt by any shop, ask them if they outsource it to a specialized shop.

I only know one shop that starts with A and the owners name starts with M who takes his turbo's to ADP and has them done professionally. Considering the cost that ATP charges and what M charges for a re&re including warranty, the M person is my recommendation.

They've been posted quite a few times in the forum over the past few years.

Is your L400 not making its full 10-11 psi of boost, and hence you're planning a rebuild, given the slop in the impeller?

If this is the case, might be worth mentioning that a $25 boost gauge can tell you in a hurry if your slothly vehicle turbo needs a $6-700 rebuild or to go looking elsewhere for a problem. (although I know the benefits of gauging are nothing new to you! 8-) )

Patty there is no such thing as a cheap turbo rebuild.

It's either rebuilt or it's just cleaned, swapped out for another used one or rebuilt without the proper calibration machinery.

Guys that know their turbo's get them rebuilt the right way professionally.

My turbo is working well.

Boost is at 11 and I monitor it.

I upped the boost to 14/15 and checked the shaft for play when I had the rubber air sock off the front. Have quite a bit of play. It's not an immediate concern but evenually the play will get worse and the fins will start to carve into the housing causing more damage.

I forgot to mention that quite often a rebuild by them includes a new housing if yours is toast.

The other cool thing is for a few extra bucks, upon request, they will hone out the housing and install a larger impeller = more air.

They do some really cool stuff there.

A hassle free experience and the best bang for your buck is to take the van to M at A Auto and have him do it all with a solid warranty.

mine must be pooched on an L300. I can barely hold 70kmh up the cut with a good run at the bottom. Used top be 60kmh till I had the IP done by M. It's certainly got the usual oil leak - though that doesn't mean anything for performance.

There are a combination of things why performance (can I use that word ? :-D ) on a Delica isn't up to par.

The turbo is just one factor in the equation.

No doubt that any looseness in a mechanical component spinning at high speed with tight tolerances is a Bad Thing, and worthy of keeping an eye on.

But unless I am missing something, if one's boost pressure is topping out at 11 psi, then the turbo is supplying more than enough air for the engine, since there must be excess dumping out the wastegate/popoff valve, yes?

So unless one's turbo is knackered to the point of no longer supplying full 11 psi (or whatever) of boost, you wouldn't see a noticeable performance degradation even from a partially-worn turbo. Again, seems like a boost gauge would be the real indicator.

Sort of like how the average person has massive overcapacity in blood filtering through their kidneys. By the time renal (kidney) failure sets in, the kidneys are already operating below 10% capacity and almost totally shot.

Wouldn't a larger impeller just be adding still more overcapacity (like growing a third kidney) unless you are planning on tweaking up the boost levels to insane levels?

Correct . The larger impeller would only be good for some heavy mod's, IP, fuel/air mixture, etc

If people would have a boost and pyro gauge installed in all delica's and pay attention to them, turbo/engines would last a lot longer believe me.

I've been looking for and wanting to do this since I bought my first Delica in December. I talked about it with my mechanic today and he told me don't waste my money on a pyro. He said I would never damage my turbo via excess temperature because I have such a low horsepower engine. I'm now thinking he was talking about total failure and replacement rather than just extending the life of my turbo and engine. Any further thoughts to share?
