Front Bull Bar Removal

Hello folks,

As I keep chiseling away at stuff on my '93 Super Exceed, I'm at the point where I'd like to remove the front bull bar and paint the grey bumper behind it as well as the black plastic on the bull bar itself.

I searched for older posts on how to remove the front bull bar, but found nothing with decent photos. Has anyone on here done this job? It sounds like you have to remove the piece of plastic that lies flat on the top side to access some of the screws.?...?

Any advice on the removal of this would be appreciated. I'm also wondering if it's possible to paint the black plastic as its completely faded to a dull grey.

I bought my Delica with the bull bar and plastic stuff in a box in the back. I ended up zip-tying the plastics together as many screws were missing...sorry, not much help there...

BUT, yes, you can spray paint the plastic. Canadian Tire or Home Depot carry some spray paint suitable for plastic. I did mine and after a year, including winter driving, it is still in great shape.

I saw this stuff at Canadian Tire. And i did some research on how to paint plastic. Seems reasonably straight forward. Now I just have to figure out how to remove the plastic along with the rest of the bull bar..... lol

Planning my first canping trip in the van over the Victoria Long Weekend. It's been freezing cold and wet so far in Southern Ontario. But the van is running top shelf at least. I might put this job off until next month when the weather is hopefully warmer and a bit drier.

The bull bar itself is attached with just a few bolts under the bumper. That’s easy. (Get someone to hold it so it doesn’t land on you!)

There's about 10 bolts holding the plastic. The top piece needs to be lifted from the back first, then it slides off and you have a few hidden bolts for the bottom section.

The bull bar itself is attached under the van (can't remember if it's 2 or 4 bolts) and under the plastic trim (4 bolts). It seems to hold on even without bolts when you remove it, but be careful, I might just have been lucky haha. All my bars and foot steps are currently at powdercoating! :D

The way it's attached is way too overkill, but hey, everything holds on tight so that's fine :p

Let us know if you drive across Ottawa, me and Deskinthewoods are just on the other side of the river! :)

And thanks for the tips on how to remove the front bull bar assembly. It's difficult without having photos to look at,but it makes more sense now. I work at a local high school here in Peterborough and I'm good friends with the Auto Shop teacher. This might be a good job for some of his students to tackle. I actually thought about removing the old bull bar and replacing it with the more modern streamlined front end found on the newer L300's. The problem is finding one. I'm the only Delica owner here where I live.

As far as Ottawa goes, I do get up that way sometimes in the summer months. I'm headed to Almonte Ontario, which is somewhat close to Ottawa on June 7th, 8th & 9th for a VW Bus Campout. I go as an honorary member from owning several in the past. It's pretty cool and right on the Mississippi River. They've had to cap the attendance at 250 Busses because it was getting too large to manage.
