l400 GAS block heater install

Post by barrett »

Hello all. I am a 2002 l400 owner in need of a block heat install and no mechanic I can find has a clue which frost plug to put it in. Given the engine model the plug suggests either RR or RC. Anyone have any insight into this matter? I did a search on the site and was rather surprised I found very little info on the l400 gassers/block heater install. Perhaps I was looking in the wrong place. If so, please point me in the right direction. Thanks for your time.

Gentlemen, I would highly recommend a Polar Pad available at Canadian Tire. 15 minutes to install and you don't have to drain any fluids. They work great. I have one on my Strada, my Subaru and have installed them on a number of minitrucks. I don't know about the slightly cheaper other brands but the Polar Pad on my Subaru has gotten me through 6 Winnipeg winters and is ready for the seventh. Ralph in Winnipeg.

Hey Ralph.
I used to use one in my vw beetle (aircooled). It helped foresure. My impression was with an antifreeze warmer it makes the head warmer preventing oil creep up into the heads in the winter and conversely, some washout as well. Im not sure a less viscous oil would help this. It wWILL make your engine turn over easier however.

Also Manitoba...There are inline warmers available...It might be the route I go.

Hi manitoba, if you want to check out my Strada let me know (invite open to all Manitoba delica owners). I'd love to have a diesel chat with local folks. Time press - I'm parking the truck for the winter next week so it would have to happen Saturday. I'm in st. James on Linwood Street. Let me know!

Hi barret, I looked at the inline heaters and have had them on various other vehicles but I have had good experiences with the Polar Pad. And I didn't have to cut a rad hose etc, etc. I usually switch to lighter oil in the winter in my daihatsu and subaru from 10w30 to 5w30. It sure helps starting any vehicle in the cold as well as a good battery and robust electrical system. The Strada gets parked so 15w40 semi synthetic all the time.

Hi Barrett,

Did you end up installing a frost plug block heater in your V6?

I may be picking up a gas Delica S3 next week and would need to install a block heater in it also. Trying to figure out the model of heater and where to install it.

Thanks

I have a zerostart 3100055 plug which fits. And it goes in the rc plug hole. Haven't had a chance to get it in yet however. Looks pretty straight forward other than taking air intake off.
