Disconnected waste gate hose

While beginning the alternator removal job I saw that the small air hose connecting to the waste gate has been disconnected. For who knows how long???

I'm going to replace it with a new one but can anyone chime in as to what having this disconnected does power wise?.

Luckily, that's the hose that goes to the Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve, which is the obvious canister in your picture. Having that hose disconnected means you'd have a vacuum leak whenever the engine tries to open the EGR, but vacuum leaks aren't hugely problematic on a diesel.

The wastegate actuator is further back and lower on the engine, at the end of the thick rubber-covered hose that's behind your thumbnail.

You're removing the alternator from below, right?

Yessir! Thanks Growler the alternator has started to chirp so its time for new bearings. Removal seems pretty straight forward, I'm taking my time, no swearing.... yet. Just hoping I don't need to undue the oil filter as I've read on other feeds which could help the process.

Well that was fun, actually I really enjoyed the alternator removal, and reinstall. No swearing. But now that everything is together and I went for a drive I notice I'm getting a bit more black smoke than I'm used to. Could be due to Vancouver being a bit more chilly and not driving the van for a week?

Maybe that vacuum hose reinstall in the original post did something, who knows. Growler any ideas?

It might have something to do with all that bad tar sand diesel you've been having in BC!

If your EGR valve is stuck open you'll have a bit more black smoke- it's possible someone removed that hose on purpose. I'd try removing the hose again and see if that helps. If the valve is sticky it might take a while to close, so don't expect instant results.

The EGR is supposed to reduce NOx emissions, but it's prone to becoming clogged which tends to produce more emissions than ever, while reducing power and fuel economy. A lot of people just remove or disable the EGR.

Some people fit an EGR blanking plate between the valve and the inlet manifold, for the unmodified look: http://www.delica.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?f=100&t=304

Well I gone and done it, cleaned the EGR and had a blast doing it. I know a lot of people blank this thing out but I'm a resto guy and I wanna see this thing in action. Removal was quite smooth thanks to Growler's helpful link from another site. Heres a first view after just removing it. Notice the 1/8" of soot coating the walls. The spring action was quite stiff as well.

Here it is after some carb cleaner and scrubbing! Notice the little port the arrow is pointing to. It was completely clogged with grease and black death.

The internal spring also freed up nicely so hopefully I'll report back with less smoke results after a longer test drive.
