Coolant gurgling / scooter purchase

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

I'm very much enjoying the quiet when I shut it down, and the painless starts. I'm a little bummed that after $3000, I still have sway bar links to replace, electrical gremlins to fix, new tires to buy and a timing belt etc to replace in 20,000km. Oh well, such is life.

you replaced the head and did not do the timing belt with only 20,000km left?

I would assume $3000.00 :shock: :shock: would include the belts and tensioners...

Kind of like rebuilding a motor and putting the used oil back in?

that is crazzzzzzzzzzzzzzy! That is crazzzzzzzzzzzier than welding two delicas together and putting a small block chev in!!!

RSI did a ton of work on my van for just under $3000 before taxes - a complete head, all the belts, timing and balancer tensioner, new water pump, oil pump o-ring, injection pump seal, valve cover gasket, pressure relief valve, 4 front oil seals, new head bolts, balancer shaft bearing and sleeve, new cooling fan and clutch, thermostat, and radiator cap, fluids, filters, etc, etc.

I know that Steven sometimes seems to be out to sabotage his own reputation, but I have never had any problems at all with RSI - quite the opposite, actually. For the price of just the head, I nearly had my engine completely reconditioned.

Butch said that the timing belt would require a lot more labour because it would require taking apart a different part of the engine. He also told me that if he were me, he wouldn't bother replacing it if I still had another 20,000km to go.

Here is the break-down:

- R/R cylinder head assy - $1,100
- R/I v/seal, locks and spring, maching of valves and settings of valve clearance (L300) - $275
- Cylinder head assy (parts) - $875
- Injector washer set - $65
- Intake/Exhaust manifold gasket - $65
- Cylinder head gasket - $115
- Fuel return line - $65
- Valve cover gasket - $55
- Shop Supplies - $55
- Change engine oil and filter (owner supplied oil and filter) - $30
- Discounts - free oil change coupon - -$30

Subtotal: $2,670.00
Add taxes: $2,990.40

I'm wondering why the receipt says "assy" when Butch said he wasn't giving me a head assembly, just the head!? The initial quote for work was $2100 - 2600 and that went up because of the valve cover gasket and fuel return line. I decided against an "engine overhaul" because I couldn't afford the $4800-5600 price tag, or the re-build which would have been $8000 (twice what I paid for the van).

You have to take the belt off to replace the head.... Little more work to pull of the v-belts and tensioner, and bottom pulley- so maybe 1 hour more maybe......but not really much more work once you have the head off...

It took me maybe 4 hours to do all my belts, seals, tensioners, cooling system, etc it was first time working on the delica so I went slow...

It looks like you got a new head bare $875.00 and they put all your old parts into it? (I would assume cam, valves, springs, rockers etc re-used) or it was a complete head and they did a valve job and setup clearance? I cannot tell from the bill?.... Meaning some labour went into putting these parts in and surfacing the valves....

Doing my own work I would have replaced the belts if I was going to do the cylinder head.... For the amount you drive that thing 20,000km is maybe 1/2 year and it is going to be more labour...

Really it would be pull the v-belts, pull the bottom pulley, undo tensioners, pull tensioners....maybe 1 hour more in my mind if you already have the head off, seat out etc....??

I guess in my mind it is if the tensioner or belt fails it will destroy the new head/motor...that is why I would do it especially given how much you use it (20,000km was like 1.5 years on my Delica)...

This is why I had asked about it initially, but was told it would cost almost as much as doing the whole job at once, so I might as well wait 20,000km. Although, on the upside, I will be commuting by scooter from a closer location, now that I've bought an apartment in Coquitlam.

Get an old Honda XL350 Scooter Insurance...with way more fun...need a class6 but the wheelies make that worth while....

Not sure the scooter will pull the trailer....

The trailer is going to be parked in a storage lot since it won't fit in my underground. I will work on getting a class 6, but for now, I'm looking at 50cc's. until I'm 25, motorcycle insurance is crazy expensive, combined with the fact that I'm looking to ride solo in less than a month and can't afford a decent motorcycle.

check the rates on under 400cc it is really cheap...

Xl350 can be had for 800-1200 good old bikes...even a 185 -350 xl is fun all day...

safer than a scooter (keep up with traffic, real size wheels (more stable), bigger so not treated like a ...scooter)

Hi there,

Just to clarify certain things, for a cylinder head job, we only take off the top timing belt cover (5- 10mm bolts) and camshaft gear bolt to take the cylinder head off. We will make recommendations and costings on what we find and it's up to the customer to decide from there. And lastly, we will back up our workmanship with our warranty .... all we ask is to let us know :-D

Sorry but it makes no sense not to replace the belts, especially with only 20k left on it, removing the bottom pulley and over is simple, and the access for timing and tensioning the belt is much improved, not to mention that the balance belt or tensioner could be more tired than the timing anyway, and any failure in either belt could mean stripping all of it down again. But thats just me. And I wont mention the water pump lol.
