Glow Plugs?? Another Q?

Post by bman »

Answer me this if you can???

When my van (92 L300) is cold....like 12 hours sitting cold, the glow plugs do not cycle on when the key is turned to the on position. At least not every time....sometimes if I turn the key on and off a few times, remove it, curse and swear a bit, they will cycle on and the van starts just fine. But not every time, thus we have had a couple difficult starts. Luckily it has started every time.

However....if the engine has been running and is warm, they click on and off just fine at start up, every time.

Had a quick look under the seat and I have good connections at the plugs, but haven't yet had time to look for anything else.

ECU unit?

I had also read that there is a temp sensor and it will only activate the glow plugs if the engine is cold. If this is the case anyone know where this thing is so I can see if something is up with it??

Thanks!

Hi there,

It sounds like the two pin temp sensor located on the top portion of your cylinder head near the #1 glo plug. Check that first and ECU next.

Good luck:)

If you need an ECU I'm selling a refurbished one. As CVI suggests, it sounds like the temperature sensor since it only happens when colder.

My 1991 was doing the same last winter and I cleaned up the bus bar
with some abrasive steel wool. Fixed my problem. Check that the sensor
is ok as well (mentioned previously)

Doesn't sound like it is it, but my glow plugs where going psycho before clicking on/off, on/off after start-up and I replaced the ECU and this alleviated problem - so I guess it wasn't the temp sensor for me.

FYI - The ECU is behind the panelling on the right side of car just behind driver's side door. You need to take off seatbelt and figure out how to pull of panelling and then you just swap unit. Easy.
