TD04 Turbo rebuild

While the head is off, time to redo the turbo.

Removing compressor wheel and body

Now I know it's a flatback turbo

Oil deflector and slinger removed

This face is curved in s superback turbo

Everything apart. Now waiting for rebuild kit to arrive. I needed to dismantle it to fin out if I needed a superback or flatback kit. Everything will need a good cleaning, especially at the turbine end.

Rebuild kit came today. Hooray. With luck this will be all completed tomorrow.

Cleaned up turbine and shaft. There was a lot of coke in the grooves.

Install Piston ring:

Slip on bearing before installing in turbo cartridge.

New oil O-ring seal

New flinger and ring.

Oil deflector and flat back insert with flinger installed:

Everything installed, now snap ring to hold it all together.

New O-ring oil seal and compressor wheel installed. They provide a new nut, but it was cut in reversed thread and didn't work.

This little hole has to be lined up to a tit in the housing when installing into turbo.

Big snap ring installed, and ready for exhaust manifold, but without oil leaks. Easy peasy.

One thing I didn't mention is that once you have everything off the turbo shaft on the compressor side, it takes a bit of a whack to pop the shaft out the turbine (exhaust) side. The split ring on that end keeps it in place. Good luck with it.

In the middle of this job right now. Turbo to exhaust unbolts fairly easily, but Turbo to exhaust manifold (3 nuts) is buried in there. Has anyone in Delica-land managed to unbolt the Turbo from the exhaust manifold without having to remove the entire exhaust assembly? If yes, then any tips would be much appreciated.

Now that may be a stupid question, but how do I know the turbo type/model in my L300 engine 4D56?

I'm asking because on my last oil change, I noticed a lot of oil dripping from the turbo. So before it blows, I was thinking refurbishing it with one of these kits.

The question is, which kits should I get.

It should be a TD04, but you'll have to look at the internals to see if its superback or flatback. AS far as kits go, you can pay a little or a lot and take your chances with quality. I paid $70 for mine.

I looked at the ones available on eBay and there is not much choices but the one flatback TD04 at 72$ plus shipping.

Now with your flatback or superback... I have no idea what I would look at to determine which is which... So I guess I should take my chances and order the TD04 since it's a difference of 400-500$ from a refurbished turbo or a repair kit.

Now that I have been looking more and more into this, I read posts on other forums that strongly suggest NOT to do it yourself because of the high RPM and truly needs to be balanced and so on.

I have a friend that says he can help me on this. I guess it would not hurt to give it a shot!

So, Rattlenbang, I guess you're the only one in this forum that did that. Again, I was just wondering about what I have been reading. Some say it has to be professionally balanced. On our type of turbos, do we really need to do that?

What are your thoughts on this?

Possibly. But the thing is that if it's unbalanced now, it will still be after you replace the seals and bearings. In that regard you haven't made anything worse and should fix the oil leak problem. What you are doing with this kit is replacing seals and bearings. If you have other problems this won't fix it. You could purchase a new cartridge and go that way if you prefer.

Chances are good that if you do this you will stop oil leaking from the turbo (mine still seeps by the way, but it's a lot better than it was) but you won't have a new one; for that you will have to buy a new one, or pay big bucks for a rebuild. Local shops want about a grand, though you can buy a new one for less than $400.00 if you dig hard enough. I don't know what replacement cartridges (all the moving parts) are worth.
For me, paying $75.00 and a few hours work was worth it to deal with a nasty oil leak; I would hate to spend more for that issue. If it explodes in a year, or ten, then I'll pop another one in, but for now it works fine and fixed my problem. If you do the "rebuild" correctly you will be further ahead, but no, you won't have an equivalent to new turbo. You'll have a used turbo that doesn't leak, no more, no less.
