I've been watching as much as possible online. Dick-all for TV coverage as usual.
Our guy Hacking unfortunately pulled out 1st round. I would love to be there!

for a race thats much more entertaining and around a 1000 times cooler than most televised races, you would think it would get more exposure.

Unfortunately that does not apply to Canada. :-(
Here are some recent news:

'Pending validation by the race marshalls, Russian driver Vladimir Chagin (Kamaz) gets - on his 40th birthday - his fourth consecutive stage victory on this 32nd Dakar and reaches a total and personal record of 51 stage victories in the truck category. This is just a couple of stage victories shy of the absolute record in stage victories of the Dakar held by Stéphane Peterhansel! With a time of 1h53’36, the "Tsar" arrived 07’44 ahead of his faithful lieutenant and countryman Firdaus Kabirov (Kamaz) and 11’50 ahead of the third Kamaz driver Russia’s Ilgizar Mardeev… The mishaps of Brazilian driver Andre De Azevedo (Tatra), stuck for several hours in the sand dunes at the end of the stage due to an electrical breakdown and this new victory allow both Kamaz drivers to take a very strong lead in the overall standings with Chagin having now a 26’27 on Kabirov, but - more importantly - a 2h24’33 (!) lead over the third driver in the standings, Dutchman Marcel Van Vliet (Ginaf).'

Chagin's victory did not prevent him from being pulled over for speeding though:

Agreed! For an event that is on par with climbing Everest, especially as an amateur, it gets little respect from NA. But it's too long and drawn out for most N.Americans. Like basketball compared to soccer. Soccer takes patience and appreciation for subtleties.
Lawrence Hacking's book about being the 1st Canadian to finish Dakar (on an amateur Honda at that!) is a fantastic read. His entry into vehicle class this year was dissapointing, but a step nevertheless.
Cheers,
Erik

Rally really doesn't get the respect it deserves. For some reason they televise NASCAR (lets see who falls asleep at the wheel first) but never rallysport. Of all the possible motorsport races, rally is the one that really tests driving ability.
I volunteer at a bunch of the local rallies, and we really never have more than a dozen spectators, maybe a photographer or 2, but rarely a video crew.

Awesome pictures, and I can completely agree, there isn't nearly as much coverage of rally in north american media as there needs to be. I can safely say I'm glued to the TV every time I catch it on :3.

Though, correct me if I'm wrong, wasn't there news of Mitsu pulling their team from the Dakkar this year, or at least part of the team? I seem to remember hearing it from somewheres (maybe even here), though I can't find the webpage where I saw the news on before.

Anyone care to prove me wrong on that? I'm hoping Mitsu still has their nose in on this rally..!

Mitsu has stopped sending a teams to Dakar despite lots of wins. Probably because the vehicles no longer exist as far as I know ie: Pajero/Lancer rally car.
But there are still many privateers driving Mitsubishi's.
VW car won this year! And KTM bike no surprise.

well one canadian managed to finish (just finishing this race is a massive accomplishment), http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=529712

I believe a total of 5 Canadians entered on motorcycles and only one made it past stage 3 of a 14 stage rally. I was really rooting for Don Hatton from Duncan BC but he had a hell of a time and had to withdraw on stage 3 as well. Quite a tale - http://www.destinationdakar.com/2010/01 ... -from-don/

I found a way to download daily European dakar coverage although it wasn't much better than the daily highlight videos on http://www.sbs.com.au/dakar/

Fun fact: the most winning vehicle in the history of the dakar rally is the Mitsubishi Pajero :-D Just be careful calling things "pajero" in south america :?
