I had to part ways with my '96 L400 earlier this year due to severe rust and am now trying to figure out what vehicle to get next. I was planning on a similar L400 but noticed a neighbor working on a Mazda Bongo Friendee he recently imported and got curious. It seems like a decent camper solution with the pop-top but I know very little about the vehicle and would love to get some feedback from people who have experience with them.

We don't need an offroad vehicle but like the ability to get off the beaten path. We are are mostly looking for a vehicle, which can serve both as an everyday driver and as a camper for getting out of the city.

Are there any 'special' quirks with the Friendee we need to know about? Any considerations or things to look for prior to importing one?

Any feedback is most welcome!

I have rented camperized versions of that van several times in New Zealand.
The van Is quite capable on and off asphalt, I suspect that it due to weight distribution.
You should know that the passenger seat is Very uncomfortable, with little foam and spring support and the engine heat transfers up through the seat on long drives.
I would not hesitate to rent them again, but I would hesitate to own one for that reason.
Just my two bits.
