Shit! Will keep a look out.

How did they steal it? Did they have a key or are our vans easily started without one? (Just curious as I want to protect against mine being stolen!)

Well, crap, that's awful :-(

The locks on our vans are quite primitive. The traditional (IE "all over the internet") method of stealing a vehicle from our era is to use a big screwdriver, hammer it into the lock hole (either door or ignition), and force the lock to turn with some kind of lever. If you've ever noticed a car with a mashed or damaged lock hole, that's what's happened.

Some vehicles can be stolen by noting down the VIN and having a dealer make a new key. This isn't a worry with our vans, as there's no visible VIN and good luck convincing a dealer to make a key for it.

The best thing to do is make it obviously more difficult/time consuming to steal: an alarm with a flashing light (but no alarm stickers so they don't know what model it is), park it somewhere visible, steering wheel lock, kill switch on the IP solenoid, etc. The idea is to make some other vehicle a more attractive target. That said, if it's being stolen to order there's not much you can do.

She was reported & recovered somewhere in south Surrey. This happened about six hours after this post went up.

This club is awesome!

Glad the van got found! I worry about mine parked on the street as a meticulous/paranoid Delica owner should be....

Would this be as straight forward as splicing in a hidden switch to the solenoid? Sounds like a good theft deterrent that I could pursue.

Yup, an inline switch that disconnects the power going to the solenoid. The risk is that you're then introducing a potential failure point in a critical system that might leave you without a running engine in the middle of the freeway if it goes wrong.

Very true, good point. Maybe splicing it into the glow plug relay would be less risky. Or just a club on the steering wheel, but wheres the electrical fun in that.
