L300 vs L400 road tripping?

I've been the proud owner of an L300 for the past few months, and just had a valve work its way into combustion chamber and cause some trouble.
I'm looking at rebuild or replace. The eventual goal is to drive the van from Vancouver to Mexico and maybe a little further. I hear the L400s are much better for highway driving. Is it worth fixing an l300 and is there anything I can do to it to make it more reliable and capable on the highway? Should I cut my losses and replace it with an L400? I realize there likely isn't an easy answer.
