Owning flat-out vs Payments... who's where?
So, through a stroke of financial horse trading we've consolidated our outstanding debt and paid off the Zanimo Wagon in the process. This made me realize that I never once, since we brought her home thought of her less than 100% ours, regardless of the possibility of Repossession due to non-payment. But having paid it off now it does seem to feel a little lighter. Also the side-window rubber entered an accelerated rate of decomposition, like the day we paid it off.
My point is, with these being somewhat expensive vehicles (esp here in the states..) how many of us have had to take out a loan to buy our vans or did you have a bunch of cash on hand? For those of us with payments did you have to get creative or was it pretty straight forward?
Hope I'm not getting to personal...Just happy to have mine paid in full and wondering how everyone else came into theirs..

Thanks for the reply. I'm currently selling my F350 to get cash for cool stuff like Snorkle's and roof baskets and such. The market's up on old diesels right now so I figured it's a good time to sell.

I've been wanting a Delica for quite a long time and finally having the chance we jumped at it. I got even luckier and found this forum! It feel great to knowing that if I have a question there's a great group to ask and get the help. Especially before I make a costly mistake!

Cash only here, mainly because I usually own 2 or 3 cars at a time and never kept anything for more than 3 years*. Keeping track of finance would have been a nightmare.
*Weirdly, I've had the Delica for 8 years now and have no intention of selling it. Only one other car a tthe moment too. Is this called "getting old" or have I finally figured out what I like?

Nothing says "poor workmanship" more than wrinkles in the duct tape.

I paid cash
I got mine at the right time.
Price was affordable. Found out about mechanical problems after. After all is fixed I will come out even but 100% owned.

I've always paid cash for my vehicles but to keep it in perspective I've never owned anything new or fancy. The Delica is the nicest vehicle option wise I've ever owned!

My first and last financed car was in 2003 and didn't end well (kinda wish I still had the Wrangler sometimes..) all others have been old, slow and paid in full. I too have the need to own multiple vehicles. We have three at the moment and the ZW is the nicest and most expensive by far, but the '92 F350 is the newest. I'm hatching a plan to sell the F350 and the Camry and welcome a TDI VW to the family....and another old truck eventually There is a '92 Exceed P35W Crystal Lite for 8500 in Savannah GA (3 hours south of me) I'm very tempted to have His and Hers Deli's!Growlerbearnz wrote:Cash only here, mainly because I usually own 2 or 3 cars at a time and never kept anything for more than 3 years*. I used my Line-of-Credit to purchase our L300 from a friend (the deal was interesting, he gave it to me for $500 cheaper than I offered but that is a long story).
And all I can say is thanks to BC Place for having me work on the refit of the (new) roof. Long hard hours brought in dough enough to pay it off quite quickly.
I like the thought of owning with no payments. Even if it costs a G-note or so a year, it's still cheaper than a new vehicle payment and more environmentally friendly. (How much energy and materials goes into a new vehicle? And the average person gets one every few years - what a waste).

I paid cash, but I bought a vehicle with imperfections =)
We ride bicycles for most of our driving so getting a loan for a perfect vehicle was kind of out-of-the question; not reasonable in our cost-benefit analysis. But something to get us down dicey logging roads in winter and longer distances when we only have a few days off work is priceless ... so I'm attempting to stay unbothered by the nickel-and-dime repair costs of a project vehicle.
I avoid all debt - the only thing I have really considered in that arena is a mortgage to get out of the renting pit, but then I couldn't justify maybe living in the Delica?

Sealica, I'm with you 100% on the debt thing. We have a mortgage (death-grip) and have managed to pay off our debt four times in a row now but with two children in the suburbs of Atlanta on one income it's tough. I always feel good when I can deny the Bank the opportunity to make money off of me through Usury, take that you bastards I also miss being able to ride my bike as a real means of transportation. When I lived in New Orleans I sold my VW vanagon and rode a bike for four years. Still wish I had the van though...sealica wrote:I paid cash, but I bought a vehicle with imperfections =)

That's one of my favorite points about used cars. How many of the people out there who shout about the environment routinely buy brand new cars? Besides that, our little diesels are like the catfish of the fuel pond. Oil, trans fluid, WVO it'll eat it all. It's a fuel goat!Shaun Van Ramen wrote:I used my Line-of-Credit to purchase our L300 from a friend (the deal was interesting, he gave it to me for $500 cheaper than I offered but that is a long story).
