Strange that the same engines in many areas don't come with an EGR - add to that he is talking about a rich fuel mixture - which does not apply to a diesel. A diesel, by it's very nature runs lean. It needs to do so. When it runs rich you get black exhaust as is seen with turbo lag.

In either case, if I enable the EGR on my L400, it runs horribly, spitting smoke and stuttering.

Gas engine article...

pumping 900 degree carbon filled air into the motor.... Bad idea. So adding hot carbon, reducing oxygen, and keeping fuel load the same... bad idea in a diesel motor.. run rich and increase combustion temperature....

When my EGR did function the exhaust temps were able to cool down faster when I backed off the throttle. It didn't burn as much black when it first started either compared to now when the EGR is disabled. Too bad, would prefer to have it working again but the new units are pricey.

Fwiw: my L300 still has the egr unbanked.
I am reluctant to do so because it's running great with 294 000 K's.

When this all started I had great fuel economy and an EGR valve. There was a big push on the forum to block the EGR but I could not see why. The one day I decided to open my EGR valve and see how it ticked, as it were. Well, I was surprised to find that it was all blocked up with what appeared to be glazing putty, jammed into the valve ~ so I cleaned it out. City fuel economy went from 8.5 kilometres per litre to 6 kilometres per litre; engine temps got hotter; clouds of black smoke out the pipe; power sucked, like... terrible. I was livid.

I blocked it off again: Mileage improved by... I'd say 30%; engine temps cooled off substantially; tail pipe cleaned up and I got more power out of her.

Would I recommend an EGR valve to someone? I doubt it.

Falco.
