Challenge accepted Larry. It's been a busy summer, I spent all winter working far south, than May to Sept in the Yukon and NWT. I did explore, camp, and fish most every weekends, throughout the Yukon and Alaska, though on two wheels and not a Delica. I have spent some time in the north many years past, but with the greater time to putter this season was in awe of how stunning the north can be. To note, I highly recommend the Alaska ferry system as a part of your northern travels, a unique and comfortable trip despite the old age of the ships.

Most of my fishing trips were shore fishing from rivers and lakes. First up I'll mention Quiet Lake, located on the Canol Road. The Canol Road was an experience in itself, as you can see from the pictures, it's a well maintained dirt road. But never forget you are far from civilization, and shockingly, I rode the entire length to Ross River northbound without seeing a single person or other vehicle. Yep, I did carry a spot locator, but feeling this remote is to put it lightly is different. The two campsites on large Quiet Lake were empty of Campers on a late June weekend, the only vehicle found belonged to a couple of fishermen. The large Quiet Lake is reportedly loaded with Trout, including many Lake trout to 5 to 10 lbs, which are small ones by Yukon standards. I only found one promising area to cast from shore, and my nymph under an indicator landed several 6 to 8 inch trout. Too small for a shore lunch, though I found the large streams enroute had many Grayling to entertain me.

To follow the original thread theme I leave the last picture of the old boat in hopes that someone guesses the location. HInt; it's not in the Yukon or Alaska.

Thanks for the input Kevin. If I knew it was as simple as asking what you've been up to I would have asked a long time ago. I like your "HAT". Does that mean you encountered a few bugs along the way? We didn't do the Canol when up there a number of years ago. It takes time to go to all these areas as each trip can take a few days as the distances can be quite long. We went the Robert Campbell Hwy. from Watson Lake to Faro and as you say traffic is not a problem. It must have been great to have the entire summer to explore.

I have given your boat picture some thought and I believe it should be in BC on a lake that crosses into the Yukon just a little bit. If not someone has moved the mountains!! I'll add my guess later in hopes someone else has been there and seen your boat.

Now all we need to do is wake up Wayne and a few other campers.

Well Kevin I guess no one else is going to guess where the boat is so I'll take my shot. I think it must be Atlin Lake. A large lake and large mountains are only in a few places if not the Yukon or Alaska. I haven't been to the NWT but I have the feeling most of it around large lakes is pretty flat. Let me know!!

It appears Kevin is not going to confirm my guess for the location of his mystery boat so I'll just continue on with the last post of the year. Hopefully he will join in later. I still have a number of Rec Sites in my list but now they'll be a few years old and some may even be pre Delica. Merry Xmas to all and hopefully next year brings lots of km on the FSR in your Delica's.

Windfall lake is a large puddle on the Bonaparte Plateau NW of Kamloops. I visited it in August this year as is was one of the few areas that were still open for camping with all the fires. In addition, the road to the area most people use was still washed out from the spring flooding. I was pretty sure I would get a site and I knew the road I was using was still good. Windfall lake was a pleasant, but still smokey, surprise. At first glance it looks quite shallow as the terrain is quite flat around the lake. It turns out almost half the lake is very shallow but drops off to over 60' along the west shore. In addition, fish were quite plentiful and up to about 15” in size. I don't think the lake is fished a lot as the loons were no problem at all. This is a great spot with the camp site right @ the edge of the lake and very easy access. The sign for the site is a little ways off the road so it is very easy to miss. The chosen route is the Cyan one. It leaves Hwy 5 @ the Darlington FSR. It's a main road and easy to find. The routing also shows a Magenta route which will also work but you would likely need to remove downed trees along the way. Several other routes also exist now that the roads have been fixed but all have more than twice the dusty gravel and logging trucks to contend with.

Larry you are correct, that is Atlin, BC. It's been a busy holiday season, but I have been following your posts.

Pictured is Chitkat state park 30 minutes south of Haines Alaska. This was my favorite camping spot of the season in the north. Close to the beach, very quiet for a summer weekend, and impeccably clean. The scenery was superb, as besides the lapping of waves to sooth you to sleep you can clearly hear the waterfall from the glacier directly across the harbour. The location was close enough to Haines to allow a relaxing breakfast before catching the Alaska ferry. I've become a huge fan of the Alaska ferry systems, as long as you don't have to pay the outrageous prices for a vehicle. Twice this summer I met British Colombians that boarded the ferry in Bellingham without there vehicle, rented a small car once they reached Alaska, both saving money and time during their holiday.

Plus Haines is close to the amazing Kluane national park with its amazing hikes and ice fields. Being coastal Alaska the stream fishing was pretty sweet, with eager Arctic Greyling, which our turning into one of my favorite fish to pursue with a fly.

Last but not least is an excellent campsite dinner buffet [emoji4]

I'd like to thank bikebobber for his kind words this month. It's nice to know a few people look @ the thread and hopefully this will be the year others post some of their trips to the back country.

This month I've gone back into the archives to find Coldscaur Lake ( 3650 ' ) 32 km.west of Clearwater. Coldscaur is a lake I've driven by many times but have yet to fish. It's next to Camp 2 RD. a major FSR so it is very easy to get to. I always seem to be going to a 'better' lake or @ least one farther from the crowds. Talking to people who fish there it's a nice lake to fish. The Rec. Sites are managed by Yellowhead Community Services which do the best job of any maintenance group looking after these sites. ( You almost want to take your shoes off so you don't leave dust on the outhouse floor. ) Coldscaur has 2 defined camping areas. The south area has 2 accesses to the lake and an undefined open area for camping. The north area has 13 defined campsites spread along the west end of the lake. Coldscaur can make a great home base to explore the many lakes and Rec Sites within a short drive. Next month can be someone else's turn and I'll continue with more from the BC interior in April. It would be nice to get another contribution from thelazygreenfox. It would also be nice to get contributions from other parts of the country or continent.

I think the camping season will be a little late this year for those of us who like to camp when it's warm. I was out to Morgan lake this weekend to see if the ice was off. The good news is it was, the bad news is the guys out fishing were dressed to go ice fishing. This lake has been open as early as early March but last year there was snow on the ground and a completely frozen lake in early March. Once the snow melts I'll check a few higher lakes.

I have gone back into my archives again as it appears spring is still a long way away especially @ higher elevations. I chose Pioneer Lake, one of 100's of lakes on the “Fishing Hwy.” west of Little Fort. I was last their in 2010 which was the second year for Delica camping. Pioneer is almost 4300 ' elevation which is typical of the area. The camping spot has been used for years but it is not a BC Recreation Site so no facilities exist. When we were there a spot for a “john” had been used for some time and a great supply of fire wood was available. ( It was there when we left as well due to a camp fire ban. ) Pioneer is a pretty lake with an island, deep areas and a shallow area to practice technique on small fish. It's hard to say what the road in is like now but it was a little overgrown when last there. That part of the road is only about 300m long so it would only be a little bushwhacking, if necessary. It looks so good maybe this is the year to return!

Silence Lake is a medium sized lake located NE of Clearwater. I chose it as my first camping trip (finally) of the year to test a few improvements. Silence is @ an elevation of just over 2500'. This should mean warm days and only cool nights. In addition, the stocking reports on the lake show 5000 fish per year for the last several years. It is just over 35 km on Raft River FSR which is usually enough to keep the crowds down. Only 3 camping spots should help as well. The Rec site is quite nice with a very good boat launch. My reasoning was good but the fishing was not! I only caught 2 'pencil' trout. To be fair I only fished for part of 2 days as I don't like to fish when it's pouring rain. I did get to talk to a guy from Clearwater that was out bear hunting and he told tales of great fishing in the past and even told me where to catch them. I may try again but with all the good lakes west of Clearwater it may be some time. If anyone wants to go to Silence Lake make sure you have the exact turn as there are no signs @ the entrance or when you get to the site. Now back to the stocking reports to pick the next lake.

My contribution for this month is Goose Lake. I got to spend 5 days @ Goose Lake in mid-June. This year it seems impossible to go camping without some rain or a good thunderstorm. We arrived, however, to a beautiful afternoon and a clear view of what we think is Mt. Spearing c/w snow. Turns out it was only 20 km as the crow flys not the 50 or more we thought. I think we only saw it 1 more time for part of a day!.This Goose Lake is off the Pike Mountain road north of Princeton and west of Hwy.#5. There are several lakes in the area and most have good Recreation Sites and nice Rainbow trout. The sites @ Goose Lake are spread out along the SE corner of the lake and seem to be well used. Access to the lake is limited. The reeds basically circle the lake. This can provide great fishing but we were a little early for the dragon and damsel fly hatches. The fishing was good however, with almost all fish in the 14 to 15 inch range. They were so much alike we began to wonder if we were catching the same fish over and over! The road recommended is suitable for small trailers etc. . We took a short cut via Lodwick on the way back. I would not recommend this road as it is overgrown in spots and has some very steep grades. It would be faster to go back to the highway and come back in to the north end of Lodwick lake.

The last week in July I had my multi-day trip for the year. I went from Kamloops via Lumby on Hwy. #6 to a power line RoW just west of Needles. The intent was to come out @ Revelstoke via FSR's 7 days later. The first stay for 2 days was Snowshoe lake. Snowshoe lake is a small isolated lake even though it is close to the highway. The power line access means no cars for sure. The road climbs and descends several times and you basically end up at the same elevation as the highway. I discovered both camp sites after I unloaded all my stuff @ the 'overflow' site. The site up the hill was great with lots of shade, a gentle breeze and few bugs. The lake was crystal clear and warm ( 70+ F ) and calm the entire time I was there. If the fishing was good I'd give it a 9/10. It's the first time in years I haven't had to put up a tarp either for rain or sun. The boat launch is a bit tricky as there is a 12 inch + drop where my tires were and I wasn't sure I had enough rope on my loader to release the boat. It ended up not being an issue. I should note the lake has the smartest pair of loons I've fished against. I'll continue the trip description next month. I should also note the only Delica I saw in over 700 km was an L400 “pavement princess”. I did talk to one guy though that had seen one in Nakusp! One of these days I'll meet one on an FSR. As per usual if anyone has a camping trip they think others might be interested in please add it whether it's a BC Recreation site or anywhere a Delica may go!!
