Thanks Irp374, those digital maps are great. What are you using to generate them? Yes, the Seton Rask Rd (the cyan route) is the one we took, but we forked to the right and took the yellow route to access the beach. We had traveled a bit further along the cyan route but it was being logged, and was very muddy. I even dropped her into 4L to climb back out of the area  ! At the end of the yellow route you can see that grey trail heading west close to the water's edge. We drove a bit along there, and it looked like it led to some private cabins, but we didn't get far enough along to find out before turning back and heading home. It's a beautiful stop and worth all the switchbacks. The descent on either side of the peak are pretty hard on the brakes, so we made out way slowly down each way in 2 or L, but great views both ways! I hadn't seen that rec site to the west (not sure it was in my mapbook?) but it looks interesting. Might have to access it from the other direction if possible until they've finished operating in that area.

I use Garmin Basecamp as the background for the BackRoads digital maps. It is free from Garmin and makes a nice package to plan routes and check with Google as it places the routes over the Google maps which lets you know , in most cases, if the road really exists or if alternates close by are a better choice. Your routes can then be downloaded to your Garmin GPS if it has a SD slot for the BackRoads maps and a USB connection. Another nice feature is it provides a grade map for your route which can be quite useful. I also have a number of the paper versions as backup but find the scale is so small a lot of detail is left off. It's easy to get lost as some old roads show on the map and new roads may not.

My last trip of the season was a day trip to a local lake called McGlashan which is said to be full of Brook trout. The road to the lake is a bit rough in spots and can be quite the challenge if it has rained a lot. The lake does not have a Rec. Site but does have a large rough camping area which has been used for years. The boat launch is quite steep and difficult to find a level area to launch your boat if the lake level is high. The lake has lots of bays, drop-offs and interesting areas to catch fish. The lake is @ 3900 feet so is good fishing most of the year including ice fishing if your interested.

Locate the Recreation Site

Post by lrp374 »

To end the year I thought I'd post the Rec Site List I have been using to write the little descriptions of the sites I've added. I have marked with an X the sites listed in the post. The scan is not very readable as the Jpeg file has to be small to be accepted by the forum. If anyone wants an unmarked copy I can add a pdf. The list contains mostly sites I've been to or a few I plan to visit “next year”. The list contains just over 150 sites and I know between 1100 and 1400 are out there for us to check out. This means I could certainly use some help. BC Delica ( Kevin ) has added a few from time to time and this year msimps has added a few. I know others such as Moby Dick use the sites but are so busy fishing or hunting he rarely has time for a picture. In this day of cell phones you would think a few 'selfies' around the camp fire would be easy.

If anyone wants info on a particular site from my list just post a request and I'll add any info I have. If not, next year I'll pick one from the list I have until I get a chance to add to it in the spring. As always anyone with info from sites they have visited please add them @ any time.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all those who drive on the Right!!

Larry

Hi Larry
Merry Christmas
I see Pass Lake mentioned on your list. I fished it 5 yrs back and pulled out a 10lb rainbow out after ice off. here's a few of my new "anemic chronomid" designs tied on 2457 hooks, my latest ties are balenced leech patterns, awesome trout catchers.

Hi Wayne - good to see your still tieing flys. I started tieing the balanced leech this year with some success. I still haven't got the balanced part very good yet. I've watched some more you tube and I think part of my problem is the hook. What do you use? The last videos refer to a Mustad 32833 BNL or a Daiichi 4460 which I can't find in Kamloops. Are these " jig " hooks that hard to come by @ the coast?

Larry
The last pack of jig hooks I bought were" Maruto" size 10 jig hooks from Sea Run Tackle on Austin ave Coquitlam. I like the Maruto cuz the hook bend was 90 deg.

Also try Wholesale outdoor sports 925 Notre Dame Dr, Kamloops. My bud at WOS in langley has jig hooks in stock but they don't do a good job at keeping stock up IMHO. Not sure about Michael and Young in Surrey.

Try Togens online http://www.togenenterprises.com/jig-hoo ... 60-10.html Also Canadian Llama online. http://www.canadianllama.com/daiichi-fl ... kl6fe697e3
Also Allen hooks at http://www.allenflyfishing.com/j100bl-j ... wire-hook/ They're barbless!!

I use a small finishing nail and sometimes a tungsten gold 1/8 bead for the balence. With the size 10 hook sewing pins and beads are often good balance. Phil Rowley has a good site for fly tieing Jig hooks.

Any hook with a large upturned eye can be used as a jig hook. Tie it carefully to leave room for the tippet passage through the eye.

Merry Christmas
Wayne :-D

Thanks for the info Wayne. The Maruto hooks ( 5350 ) are even identified as the Brain Chan special. Who knew!!! That Sea Run looks like a great shop, to bad it's so far away from where I go when @ the coast. I also checked out Canadian Llama only to find out they have been in business in Kamloops for 25 years. They are in Arizona til May but they informed me that Ron Thompson (who I used to buy my stuff from) is kindof an agent and has small shop in town I didn't know about. Quite an interesting day on the computer!! :-D

This year I'll start with a lake that is popular with both coast and interior fly fisherman. Dardanelles lake about 22 km east of highway 5 between Kamloops and Merritt. The road to the lake is now so good people even take small trailers right to the Rec site. The Rec site is pretty unappealing as the pine beetle has required most of the trees to be cut down. That doesn't stop the fishermen as they seem to come in droves. I stopped by once last year on a cold windy day in June and there were @ least 20 boats or tubes on the lake. Some have been coming for along time while others have just 'discovered' it. I think it's about time to 'fix' the road again to cut down on the traffic. The lake is still a good producer and for those who like chronomid fishing has a number of drop off areas and shallow areas which seem to have large fish.

There'll be no early fishing this year unless it's ice fishing. I bet I could drive around on any of the lakes with no problem. I guess the good part is I'll have more time to tie flies to catch the 'big one' . Those jig hooks work well for a balanced leech !

HiHium Lake is one of the lakes in the area with lots of good stories about lots of large fish. Most of the stories are from many years ago but it still has nice sized trout and if your in the right place can be very active. The lake is NW of Savona up the Deadman's Ck. Road or several FSR roads from Hwy. 97 between Cache Creek and Clinton. The lake is @ almost 4500 ' so fishes well all summer.

The FRS from the Deadman's Ck road to the lake has some steep grades and interesting geology shown in a few pictures I took in my first visit in 2009. The Rec Site was done to a high standard for the most desirable spots but when we were there only lightly used spots were available that had direct lake access. The lake is very shallow and quite weedy for most of the east end. The lake has a couple lodges and several cabins. The lodges and cabins would be termed 'rustic'. As usual for 2016 a cloudburst curtailed the evening fishing. Hopefully 2017 will be better and I'll get a few camping trips without the rain.

Took a trip out to Morgan lake today to check out potential fishing. It is one of the early open lakes in the area and unlike the last 7 years I've checked there was no sign of fishing anytime soon. Back to tieing flys and planning trips I guess!

This post is for a nice lake 30 km east of Penticton called Idleback. The road is a main logging road so it is usually in good condition. Take your time though as the elevation changes from less than 400M in Penticton to nearly 1300M in the first 13 km and 1450M by the time you get to the lake. The Rec site has 2 separated areas and has 20 or so campsites. I initially scouted the lake in the fall of 2014 and it looked like a great place to camp. In 2015 we tried it out and caught some nice fish and also found a good number of bike trails. I was lucky to visit again in 2016. Fishing was great again but this time instead of loons after your fish it was eagles. I must say the loons are more efficient than eagles when it comes to taking your fish!. We found this time that the winds came up in the afternoons and got so strong it ripped one of my tarps to shreds. We changed sites to get some shelter and the wind just changed direction the next day. This is however a great place to camp and fish even if some of the “better” spots appear to be taken by trailers that are set up for the summer - not the 14 day max. allowed.

Aileen lake is a small lake on the plateau south east of Vernon. It is one of a number of lakes close by and many are used for irrigation so they can be quite low as the summer progresses. My original attempt to go to Aileen lake, along with 10 others, was attempted as part of a Delica meet May 2014. ( viewtopic.php?f=45&t=15755 ) As usual a number of members expressed interest but only Trialsmaster 2 ( Arron and family ) showed up on a cold rainy day. We considered the day a success even though we could only go where it had been plowed. The attached pictures are from 2015 the same time and you could go almost anywhere as most of the snow had melted. The area can be accessed from Coldstream and Lavington from the north and Winfield from the south.
The road to Aileen lake can pose a few challenges as there are a few stream crossings with one up the the bottom of my doors the last time I was there. It is wise to take a chain saw as dead trees fall on the road regularly. The site has 2 camping spots which seem to be used on an intermittent basis. A great boat launch is available for those brave enough to trailer a boat to the site. I can't comment on the fishing but hopefully this will be the year I get to try it out. The lake is @ 4450 feet so should be good all summer long.
