Not starting

Post by delicawannabe2 »

Happy friday everyone,

My lovely wife was out for a drive today, stopped at a few places and when she tried to start our L300 it wouldn't go. There's enough juice in the battery. When I turn the ignition on the lights, fan, etc. turn on. I can hear the first glow plug click but there's no second click. When I try to turn it over nothing happens. I'm not very good at electrical troubleshooting and would really appreciate some input.

Thanks, Iain

Its either bad battery (or batteries) depending on your model.

Or the alternator has stopped charging.

If you have access to a battery charger you could recharge the battery(ies)

Or you can try a battery boost from another vehicle

If the Delica does manage to start take it to a Part Source or Canadian Tire for a free charging system test.

If it is not cranking (engine spinning):

Check battery terminals clean tight

little white connector in battery tray came apart or melted (single wire)

if auto try starting in N and P (safety switch)

try a jump start

see above post if jump (with big cables (low gauge)) start works and cables clean

Diesels need serious amps to start.

If there is enough juice and it still won't turnover....even after checking/cleaning the battery connections there could be a starter issue. Faulty solenoid or loose connection which is fairly common on any vehicle.

+Check all your fuses related to the ignition system...I know someone here has an english translation for fuses on the L300

Also, when you turn the key to start cranking, do you hear a 'click' from the starter? I'm not talking about the glow plugs but from the starter itself? Or a grinding sound? I've had the bendix part of the starter go before (both cars and planes) and sometimes a decent whack with a hammer can get one more start out of it..

There's no click from the starter. I pulled the relays and opened them up and they looked good just haven't had time to test them yet. thanks for your help.

Have you tried with a different or fully charged battery? While boosting?Don't bother waiting for the glow plugs just crank it over and see if the starter engages. Maybe it seems like I'm stating the obvious but you haven't said if you have tried this.

I've tried jumping it to no avail. I pulled the starter and tested it and everything is ok on that front. I'm just trying to find the starter fuse. I found the alternator fuse running off the positive terminal of the battery. There's another box that says ignition, lights, lock and defrost. But no visible fuses.

The ground is okay from the starter?
I wonder if it's a problem wrong with the switch.

They are fusible links, check to see if they are melted or have a bad connection.

I think you're right Firesong. I used a screwdriver on the starter and it turned over and over but wouldn't fire up.

You need twelve volts on the fuel shutoff solenoid. You need power on the glow plug bus. Then try wringing it over.

What we are saying the problem may be is the ignition switch. The glow plugs and such activate before you turn the key full for the starter to engage so it would only effect that.
