Tires

Post by philmeup1 »

Hey, does anyone have an opinion on tires for the Delica?? I've been a VW West guy for years and they required light truck tires for proper handling and safety.

Is the Delica the same?

Cheers

Yes, the Delica is the same. I use BFG A/T's but will be switching to Duratrac's for my next set. What kind of driving will you be doing?

Mine came with Yokohama geolanders on it. They've been great. I may go with some Toyo or Kumho next.

I'm not really an off road guy. It's got great tires on it now, with lots of tread but I don't think they're light truck rated. I know with the old VW busses which I've had 6 of, the handling was very poor and not very safe without the LT tires.

So I'm thinking even without doing any off roading, I'll look into a decent set. Thanks for the advice.

I had street tires on my '91. After some research and reading (here) I went to Yokohama Geolander HT/s. A little noisier than the old rubber. A little more of a rougher ride. Slight loss in gas mileage. But I'm happy with them.

I only went up one size (235/75).

Yeah, those tires look good. I've got a great tire guy here in Peterborough. I'll see if he can get these or something similar.

Anyone have a reccomendation for a summer tire that gets good MPG becuase the tread is a little less agressive? The 235/75/15 Yokohama Geolanders in the thread above are a good example of a less aggressive tread and I know a few people have ran them here in the past.

Have a full set of winters on toyota rims and mostly transporting bikes in the summer with the most aggressive off-roading driving up the diamond head road in squamish.

I have a L300.

If anyone has anything to sell as well give me a PM!

I found the kumhos sidewalls a bit soft for the 300, felt like they moved around under the van and wandered on 'tramlines'

But of course the good news! is that unlike the VWs these rigs don't need 14" LT tires, which can be an expensive PITA to track down.

I have the Geolanders as well. They are a bit noisy for sure not to terrible on the Fuely. Switching to Duratracs in the next month or two.

We're on our second set of A/T-S Geolandars (235/75R15). I typically run them at 42PSI all round. Fuel mileage has been reasonable in my opinion.

The first time they were "P" rated, this time they are "LT" rated. To be frank, in general use I haven't really noticed much of a difference between the two. The ride has generally been quiet and comfortable, 'though as the tread lugs wear down the ride becomes a little louder, but not by much. In both cases I've been off road ~ and I do mean off the road, both performed very well. On the forest service roads both performed very well. Highway cruising is fabulous.

While using the P rated tyres I once received a puncture from driving onto a screw at a construction site; one time I slipped off wet rocks whilst traversing a washed out culvert, resulting in impaling my aft right side wall on a three inch wide extension of the culvert. The P rated Yokos are six ply (4 on the tread/2 side wall*), where the LT rated are ten ply (6/4*): Would this have made a difference at that washed out culvert?
Probably not. With my current LT rated Yokos I've had two construction site punctures (one Robertson #8/ one Phillips #10).

Falco.
(*I think ~ best to double check.)

Can 30" tires be run on a stock L3 or 400 without any rub/clearance issues?

Wondering the same thing on my L300 - or, rather, what is the largest tire I can run on my stock height L300? Slight rubbing could be tolerated...
