Pyro's move independant of all other gauges.
it tells you how hard the engine is working and gives you a GUIDELINE to drive by. they are about $150 and 2 hours to install. (if Proactive has the engine out then you can have the sensor installed dirt cheap).
safe guideline is 1000F post turbo and 1200F preturbo. once again this is a guideline. if you go over the prescribed guidelines you engine isn't suddenly going to go BANG but if you constantly go over then you can expect a nice large repair bill, motel rooms and upset family.
too many guys report that they drive by the temp gauge, bad idea. you can be running at 1400F and the water temp reads normal. or you can be in the red on the temp gauge and be running 1000F. there is no corilation between the 2 gauges.

anyone that says you don't need them are risk takers or just too cheap to buy one.
but
hey
it is their money, their frustration and their time so what do i care.

This will let you know if the engine is working harder than normal? is that right? What are the pros and cons/cost of having one installed? Could someone direct me to a thread about them?

Of course one of the people on record saying you don't need one is CCAutos... one of the very well respected Delica mechanics of this site... so take that for what it's worth. Obviously Mitsubishi Engineers also didn't see it as a requirement.

I can definitely see the value of one, but that said, if you pay attention to the other temperature gauge, and drive appropriately, you will never be in serious trouble. And if you DON'T pay attention to the gauge that exists right now... adding (and ignoring) another gauge isn't going to help you any.

As for anyone who says that the 2 temperatures aren't related... that would be quite the trick considering that it would be very hard to heat up either one without affecting the other. The big advantage to the pyrometer over the existing coolant temperature gauge is speed. An EGT gauge will always let you know about an issue sooner than the coolant temperature just due to the fact that it takes time to get the coolant up to temperature to affect the reading, that said though, the coolant temperature WILL follow.

ah yes, baseless name calling... just what I've come to expect from you.... because heaven forbid we back up any of our statements with facts or useful information... so explain to me exactly which statement I made is "ignorant" and explain how things work in your twisted version of reality.

name calling? i don't think so.
ignorance: the lack of knowledge
now IF i called you "little boy", "butthead" , "arogant punk" , "loud mouthed goofus" THEN i would be name calling but i am not.

lets see, i post up facts based on 30 years experience (yep, Greeny, been wrenching on diesels for 30 years. who would have thunk it.) based on watching BOTH gauges actually working as driving down the road. this experience is not just Land Cruisers but Delicas, Pajeros, Elf etc etc.

you post up: "I think they are a good idea, that said, I don't have one... just never gotten around to it..."
so your actual experience is... nada, ziltch, squat ... hence you are ignorant of the facts.
instead of being cheap, go install one and then drive Scotts hill. of course you will see that the 2 gauges do not conicide with one another but that won't change your posts. it seems if i am right... well then i must be lying again.

but don't that stop you from blabbering on and getting another thread locked down.

<in reality, it is fun to watch you stumbling along showing everyone how little you actual know>

They will coincide perfectly, in fact I have done this trip in a delica equipped with a pyro, and they DO coincide... the coolant gauge doesn't move as quickly, but it goes up corresponding to the EGT going up, and then comes down corresponding to the EGT as well, just delayed slightly (due to the time it takes to warm the coolant vs the time it takes to warm the exhaust itself)

And failing that, elementry school physics would tell you that in the same engine the 2 can't possibly go opposite directions, they are related.
but that won't change your posts. it seems if i am right... well then i must be lying again.
I'm still waiting for you to be right on something... so...
but don't that stop you from blabbering on and getting another thread locked down.
I know you're trying hard to get another thread locked... but maybe you should keep your personal attacks to yourself and out of the public forum.

If you want to attack me, feel free to send me a PM... if you have something construcitve, and evidence based to say, then do so.

you did one trip and basing your post on that?

oh my god, i must be wrong.

so where was the probe mounted? pre turbo or post turbo. was it at the turbo or a foot away? did you crawl under to check the proper location?

the water temp went up and then back down how far? what temp did the pyro reach?

So.. explain how the 2 could be unrelated then? it's only 1 engine! the heat can't be directed in to one and not the other!

oh sorry... I already know your answer to that one... same answer you use for everything "because I say so"

you know i could sit here and explain it to you
but we have a problem
you wouldn't listen anyway...

see, in your little world things HAVE to be according to  and if they don't jive then they are wrong.

to say that you know about diesels more than someone that does this work day in and day out is pretty arrogant.

anyhow, you did not answer the questions about the location of the probe. why not? it makes a HUGE difference to the readings.

considering in hundreds of posts you have yet to explain a single thing to anyone ever, not even once, I highly doubt you could.
anyhow, you did not answer the questions about the location of the probe. why not? it makes a HUGE difference to the readings.
the readings will be higher, or lower, but if your whole argument about EGTs being unrelated to coolant temperature hinges on it, then obviously they ARE related (probe is post turbo, but in your world it wouldn't matter)

well, proactive has quoted me at 360 bucks for a pyrometer, installed, and i'm gunna go ahead and do it. considering how many long distance trips i do each year it just seems wise.
Still no word on the new engine. it seems there's a guy in kamloops that has dibbs on it, but he's been unresponsive for a few weeks. so if they can't get ahold of him next week it's mine.
they said their other supplier is 'mustang connection'.
i'd much rather get it through coombs so i'm just going to wait.

I actually quite enjoy the adventure of hitchiking. although a flight on a wednesday is only 80 bucks. tempting...
I'd love to visit the tardismotel on the way back, though... and see what all the hype is about! should i bring anything? would that be alright?
