North American Adventure

Post by nxski »

So I'm procrastinating from studying and am beginning to map out a route for my North American trip next year.

I have a few places I have to go to (marked by a star) and am searching for points in between to go to. I've created a general route and would like to know from others experiences where you think I should stop!? Below is the list of places I've come up with. Please let me know if I should get rid of something, add something, go out of my way to see something really special etc. Keep in mind that I don't want to stray tooooo far off of the route that I've listed here.

- Vancouver**
- Sun Valley*
- Sacramento
- San Jose
- Los Angeles
- Grand Canyon*
- Pheonix
- Slab City*
- Santa Fe
- Oklahoma
- Austin
- Houston
- Dallas
- Memphis *
- Nashville
- Tallahassee
- Miami*
- Jacksonville
- New York*
- Boston*
- Montreal
- Ottawa*
- Toronto*
- Thunder Bay
- Winnipeg
- Regina
- Calgary*
- Edmonton*
- Fort McMurray
- Fort Nelson
- Whitehorse*
- Dawson
- Prudhoe Bay
- Anchorage
- Skagway
- Prince George
- Vancouver**

Thanks

here is my take on it
go to joshua tree, do the 4x4 route in the park (there is a back way in, up from near niland/slab city, but better to come down it form joshua tree)
go to southern utah, arches/moab area. theres an easy 4x4 road from the hwy into arches park
skip houston and dallas, go to new orleans (i should know im from texas) the texas gulf coast is (was) nice
skip northern florida (like texas, but muggier) instead hit up the appalachian mts in the georgia/tenessee/carolina area... smoky mtns, blue ridge mts

have fun!!!

I second the trip to Joshua Tree. I lived in Desert Hot Springs Cali. for 2 years and the Joshua Tree was my favorite place.

looking over the rest of your list I can only comment on the Yukon and Alaska destinations as I now live in Whitehorse.

Whitehorse, Dawson - good choices
Skagway - o.k. good to see once, but Prudhoe Bay? take the Dempster hwy to Inuvik NWT instead....much better scenery - it too cross the Arctic circle and Inuvik is a far better destination much more to do.

If you make it to Whitehorse - look me up and we can meet for coffee and I can give you some "local info" on where to ge and what to see, and I always like seeing other delicas - as far as I know there are only 6-8 Yukon delicas...so far.

Hi there,

I cant tell you much about all your locations...

But i can tell you that Toronto - Thunder Bay is way to far to drive.

I live right in the middle between the two.
I have been all across Canada and "Lake Superior Park" is by far one of my favorite places in this country
(Its about 1.5 hours west of Sault Ste, Marie.

Let us know before your in the area. If we are free we can tour a bit with you for a few hours here in Northern Ontario.

Thanks again for the replies. I'll skip Prudhoe bay then, I'm not sure that I'll want to backtrack to the NWT's but you never know. I'll definitely let you both know when I'm in the area but as I said before this trip won't happen for about a year although possibly a little sooner.

I've budgeted $15,000 for 4.5 months which should be more than enough since I'm splitting gas and maintenance with my friends and doing lots of urban camping and budget cooking. I think this will call for some sweaty uncomfortable nights. :-D

Will you be dipping into Moab for a while or just blazing through? Having the time you do and the vehicle, it would be a great opportunity to literally visit another planet aka. Mars off the concrete.

I'll be offroading at Arches and Joshua Tree if it's open. My parents just did a similar trip to my first leg and raved about it so I will definitely spend some time there and do some hiking too.
